Dear Rosie, Gordon, et al.,

In discussing the ongoing research concerning the family of
Bertram 'I' Haget and his descendants, Gordon Kirkemo kindly
provided the following extract from DD 1001:

" Haget, Gaufrid
Son of Bertram I Haget and brother of Bertram II, both of whom
he had succeeded by c.1165/71. Married Alice, daughter of William
of Friston, by whom he had issue Geoffrey (d.v.p.), Ralph, abbot
of Fountains (1170-90), Agnes wife of Alan fitz Brien of Bedale,
Gundreda, Alice, wife of Jordan de St. Mary, Lucy, wife of Peter
fitz Toret. "

In a recent off-list exchange, Rosie Bevan noted that she
questioned the above account, esp. as to the placement of Geoffrey
Haget, Abbot Ralph and their siblings as children of Geoffrey
Haget (son of Bertram 'I'). Rosie has produced evidence from
Early Yorkshire Charters (I:402-403) which includes a discussion
of gifts by Gundreda Haget and others to Fountains abbey, and ends
with a statement (re: Add. MS. 18276, f. 228d) that

' At an earlier date Matthew de Brame had released to Geoffrey
Haget all claim to the inheritance of Geoffrey Haget, uncle
of the said Geoffrey. ' [EYC I:403, no. 520]

This appeared to infer a relationship for the younger Geoffrey
Haget as something other than as son of the elder Geoffrey -
however, whether these were the two correct individuals was not
quite certain, and (if Geoffrey the younger was the nephew of the
elder Geoffrey) it did not resolve the actual parentage of the
younger Geoffrey Haget.

In seeking further definition and documentation, the cartulary
of Sinningthwaite has been found to provide the answer. There is
a charter for Gundreda Haget's gift to Sinningthwaite of the
advowson of the church of Bileton, co. Yorks., which states in
part:

' Sciant omnes praesentes et futuri, quod ego Gundreda Hageth,
.... dedi, concessi, et hac praesenti carta mea confirmavi....
advocationem ecclesiae de Bileton, quae pertinet ad me, de
haereditate Bertrami Haget, patris mei,.... ' [1]

It is therefore quite clear that Gundreda Haget and her
siblings were the children of Bertram 'II' Haget and not of
Bertram's brother Geoffrey.

Many thanks as always to Rosie for her collegiality in
general, and sharing this information in particular. Thanks also
to Gordon for his efforts and sharing of his research in this
regard.

Cheers,

John *
