Alice de Montfort, m. Gilbert de Gaunt - and Robert Noel?

Legg inn av Roger Tansey » 30 nov 2004 10:51:27

Dear Group:

According to previous posts (see below) an Alice de Montfort, daughter
of one Hugh de Montfort, married a Robert Noel of Ellenhall,
Staffordshire. My question is, which Hugh? Is it possible that this
is the same Alice (Weiss, 143-22)who married Gilbert de Gaunt (d.
1095)?

Many thanks in advance for any help,

Best, Roger

Here is what I have on the Noel family in the male line:

ROBERT NOEL, of Ellenhall, Staffs., He was given land near 'Gnosill'
by Robert de Stafford, between 1140 & 1150. In the reign of King
Henry II he founded the priory of Ranton, near Ellenhall, Staffs.,
settling on it land & a mill. M Alice, d. of Hugh de Montfort. He
had issue: VCH Staffs III, p 251 & IV 125 WSAS III, p 119

Roger,

DD shows (page 1052) Robert Noel married Alice, the daughter of William fitz
Ailbold of Bury St. Edmunds. If it is of interest, DD provides some
background for William on page 862.

The full text for Robert is:

"Son of Noel, who may have been the younger son, or brother, of the Robert
who held Handsacre, Staffordshire, of the bishop of Chester in 1086. Noel
appears to have married Celeste, daughter of Robert de Limesy, bishop of
Chester, with whom he acquired a holding of the bishop at Grandborough,
Warwickshire (EEA xiv, pp.83-84). He also acquired Ronton by grant of
Nicholas of Stafford. Robert held half a knight's fee of the bishop of
Coventry in 1166 and a fee of Robert of Stafford; his brother Richard was
also a tenant of Stafford. See Hist. Coll. Staffs iv, 264-67, i. Pt I, 155.
Robert was founder (between 1135 and 1166) of Ronton priory, a cell of
Haughmond; the foundation charter was attested by his sons Thomas and
Philip, his brothers William the Clerk, Richard and John, and Hubert of
Handsacre and his sons Robert and William (ibidem, iv, 267). His wife was
Alice, daughter of William fitz Ailbold of Bury St Edmunds."

I hope this is helpful.
