Henry of Essex

Does anyone know the exact details of the cowardice of Henry of Essex in the
English retreat from a lost battle. Henry of Essex was the standard of the
King and was accused of cowardly actions by another knight. There was a
trial by combat, which Henry of Essex lost and he retired to a religious retreat.

Thanks a heap.

Complete Peerage vol. 10, p. 206, footnote c says that he was accused of
treason "because in a battle with the Welsh in 1157 he threw away the royal
banner and fled (Will. Newburgh, Rolls Ser., vol. i, p. 108; Gerv. Cant.,
Rolls Ser., vol. i, p. 165)".

I think you should be able to find PDF images of both the sources (in Latin)
on the French Bibliotheque Nationale's Gallica website. To see them, go to
http://gallica.bnf.fr/, follow the "Recherche" link, enter the reference
number in the "Recherche libre" field, and click "Rechercher".

The reference numbers are N050357 for William and N050339 for Gervase.
