Sylvius de Cresto [Crofto], kinsman of King John

Dear Newsgroup ~

Sometime ago, I posted a message regarding Sylvius de Cresto (or
Crofto) who was styled "king's kinsman" in 1202 [see copy below of my
earlier message]. From the date of the record, it is clear that
Sylvius de Cresto was kinsman to King John, who was king in the year
in question.

Recently, I encountered yet another reference to this obscure person
in the published Cartulary of Ramsey Monastery. The new record is
included in a jumble of records dating from the period of Empress Maud
down to King John. This record shows that "Silvio de Cresta" was
granted a pension at some unspecified date and was styled "nepoti" of
the queen:

"516. Robertus abbas Trianel, de pensione decem marcarum Silvio de
Cresta nepoti Reginae." [Reference: W.H.Hart and P.A. Lyons,
Cartularium Monasterii de Rameseia, 1 (1881): 106].

Since this record is undated, it is difficult to know with certainly
which queen is intended. However, a good bet is that the queen
involved was Eleanor of Aquitaine, wife of King Henry II of England
and mother of King John. If so, it would seem that "nepos" was used
in the sense of kinsman, not nephew, as Queen Eleanor is not known to
have had any nephews named Silvio de Cresta.

Armed with this new information, hopefully Silvio/Sylvius de
Cresta/Cresto can now be placed in the royal family tree. If anyone
has any additional particulars regarding this person, I'd appreciate
hearing from them.

Dear Newsgroup ~

The following party is identified as "kinsman" of King John in an
abstract of a contemporary lawsuit. If anyone has any particulars
about this individual and his kingship to King John, I'd appreciate
knowing about it.

Sylvius de Cresto [Crofto], clerk, styled "king's kinsman" in 1202
