In William Skene's Celtic Scotland Vol. I p. 392 he said of Crinan " he had
by the King's daughter a son Duncan, and probably another son Maldred". What
source did he have to show this doubt. Does anyone know?

One source shows that Duncan was a son of abbot Crínán of Dunkeld and
a different source states that Maldred was a son of Crínán the Thane.
While it is probable that they are referring to the same Crínán, the
identity is not certain. Thus, Skene quite properly included this
indication of doubt in his account.
