OT - Unusual census entry

Legg inn av Dragon1965fl » 25 nov 2004 04:09:55

While checking out the 1870 Indiana census, I came across this entry:

childs name, age, race, DEAD (was listed for occupation)

First time for this entry, in 14yrs of research. Usually, if one dies they
don't mention the person at all.

I might venture a guess, that the census taker asked the family member for
the names of all the children. All the names were given and written in the
census without the family member realizing only living people were to be
included. Then it was mentioned that the child had died, and the census
taker, rather than lining out the entry, simply wrote "dead" in an
available space. I don't believe I've seen this specific occurance, but
it's clear to me from the censuses I've read that things like this did
happen.
