Dear Newsgroup ~

Complete Peerage, 4 (1916): 271-274 (sub Despenser) has a good account
of the life history of Sir Hugh le Despenser, Lord Despenser (died
1349). Regarding his marriage, the author states:

"He married before 27 April 1341, Elizabeth, da. of William (de
Mountagu), Earl of Salisbury, by Katherine, daughter of Sir William de
Grandson, of Lambourn, Berkshire, Eaton, co. Hereford, etc. [Lord
Grandson]."

The author cites as his source a papal mandate to the Bishop of
Worcester, dated 5 kal. Maii 7 Benedict XII [27 April 1341], to grant
a dispensation" for this marriage [Reference: Papal Letters, vol. ii,
p. 553].

This marriage actually took place after 31 May 1341, which is
indicated by a record found in the published register of Wolstan de
Bransford, Bishop of Worcester:

"31 May 1341 Blockley: The bishop, as sole executor of the above
papal letters, after observing the lawful process, grants dispensation
for Hugh le Despenser and ELizxabeth Montacute to marry." [Reference:
R.M. Haines, Calendar of the Register of Wolstan de Bransford, Bishop
of Worcester 1339-49 (1966): 79].

Dear Newsgroup ~

In my post earlier today (see below), I inadvertedly spelled the name
Elizabeth as "ELizxabeth." This was purely a misdventure of the
keyboard. The name is correctly spelled Elizabeth in the document in
question.
