Another instalment of possible corrections for ODNB:

1. John Tiptoft, third Baron Tiptoft: he was not the third Baron, but
the first Baron of a new creation. The third Baron Tybotot was his
uncle Robert, on whose death the original barony fell into
abeyance among his three daughters. See Complete Peerage
(Tybotot, Tiptoft).

2. Henry Percy, second earl of Northumberland: it is stated (as it
was in the old DNB) that he was born Feb. 3, 1394. But according
to Complete Peerage 9:715 he was born Feb. 3, 1392/3. -- ODNB
says he crossed to England in Feb. 1416 and was knighted that
year. But according to Sir N.H. Nicolas, _History of the Battle of
Agincourt_ (2d ed. 1832) p. 386, he contracted as Sir Henry
Percy in 1415 to serve in the Agincourt campaign.

3. Roger (V) Mortimer, first Earl of March. His escape from the
Tower is said to have occurred on August 1, 1323. The old DNB
makes it exactly one year later. The Encylcopaedia Britannica
11th ed. also says he escaped in 1324.

4. John Cokayne (d. 1429): his mother is stated to have been
Cecilia Ireton. According to every source I have seen, she was
Cecilia Vernon, who married (1) John Cokayne, (2) Robert Ireton.

I think the only contemporary evidence I know of for Cecilia's identity is
the will of the younger John, in which he calls his mother Cecilia Ireton.

An Ireton appears with [the younger] John in this entry:
4 April 20 R II [1397]:
Margery, daughter and one of the heirs of Ralph de Reccheforde knight, son
and heir of John de Reccheforde of Berwardecote [Bearwardcote, co Derby], to
John Cokayn of Berwardecote and Ida his wife, Thomas Tochet parson of
Makworth, John Knyveton of Bradlegh, Peter Pole and John de Irton. Quitclaim
with warranty of a messuage, 1 carucate of land and 16s rent in
Berwardecote, Brunaldeston [Burnaston] and Hatton.
Dated at London, 4 April 20 R II [1397]. Memorandum of acknowledgment 8
April.
[Close R 20 R II Pt II, m.13d]

The arms of the Ireton family were recorded in Ashbourne church (where the
Cokaynes were buried) in 1611. But the arms of so many families were
recorded there that nothing can be concluded from that.

The Cokaynes held land at Kirk Ireton:
[insert: Sciant &c quod] Edmundus Cokayn filius Joh'is Cokayn militis dedit
[dedi &c] Thomae Cokayn filio et her. Joh'is Cokayn armigeri omnes [omnia] t
'ras in campis de Kirk-Ireton. Dat. Ao 7 E 3.
[Vincent 146, p.125, no 4; variants in [...] from Chaloner's MS]

Unfortunately this charter is probably misdated, and probably comes from the
1460s.

The only other reference I have to Cokaynes holding land there is this:
1447. Westminster. To the escheator in Derbyshire to remove the king's hand
and to meddle no further
with 60 messuages, 20 bovates of land, 200 acres of pasture and 40s worth of
rent in Ashbourne,
Compton, Parwich, Offcote, Underwood, Sturston, Kniveton, Kirk Ireton and
King's Sterndale, as it is
found by inquisition taken by Thomas Babington, late escheator, that John
Cokayne, knight, died seised
thereof, and that the premises are not held in chief and by another
inquisition taken before William
Hatton, late escheator, that they held of others than the king and that John
Cokayne is his son and next
heir and is of the age of 16 and more.
[Twells, citing Close Roll]

I've seen modern pedigrees saying Cecilia married (1) John Cokayne and (2)
Robert Ireton, and vice versa.

I wonder if the identification of Cecilia as a Vernon could possibly have
come from confusion with his great grandson John Cokayne, who married Anne,
daughter of Sir Richard Vernon?
