In doing some research following up the post by Paul Davis about a
possible link to the Sassanids I came across the following
possibility. If Roupen of Cilicia was a male line descendant of
Gagic,Grand Ishkan of Vaspourakan,died 936,according to Steven
Runciman in"The Emporer Romanus Lecapenus&his reign",Cambridge
University Press,p.265 the wife of Gagic was a daughter of an Abou
Hamza. This Abou Hamza was the son of a daughter of Ashot
Ardzrouni, grandfather of Gagic and a Vasac. Vasac was a common name
among the Orbelians of Siounia. Abou Mamza had a brother named Hasan.
Does Toumanoff say anything about the parents of Abou Hamza? I find it
interesting that the brothers have Arabic sounding names. Regards

Gurgen-Khachik, King of Vaspurakan, was "the son of Derenik from the
Artsrunid House ... and ... the sister of king Smbat Bagratuni."
(Kirakos Ganjakets'i, History of the Armenians)

I have not seen in any of the sources a mention of a wife for him.

His son was named Abusahl Hamazasp (Anne Elizabeth Redgate, The
Armenians).

While Abusahl appears to be very arabic in nature, Hamazasp is
Armenian.

A brother of this Abusahl Hamazasp was Derenik-Ašot had a
great-grandson named Hasan. In the 900's the Arabs and Islam were no
doubt influencing this souther Armenian realm.

Toumanoff's Table 12 covers Khatchik-Gagik I (II), King of Vaspourakan, d.
943/4, father of Abousahl-Hamazasp I (III). Toumanoff gives Khatchik-Gagik
a wife Mlke, daughter of Gregoire-Abouhamza, son of Vasak, whose wife is not
specified and whose parentage is unknown. Elsewhere on the same page,
Gregoire-Derenik I, father of Khatchik-Gagik I, is given a sister who
married Vasak the Renegade, apparently a different Vasak in Toumanoff's view.
