Subject: Michael BOTANEIATES

Any clue on the father and Mother of Michael BOTANEIATES (father in
law of Theodulos SYNADENOS

i saw his mother was a Bragatid daughter of Bagrat IV of Georgia

Many thanks

JL

According to the Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, 1991, the Bagratid
princess married Nikephoros III Botaneiates, son of Michael and brother of
the wife of Theodulos Synadenos. The said Bagratid princess was Martha or
Mary, daughter of Bagrat IV, and formerly wife of Michael VII Parapinaces.
She was a genuine descendant of Sennacherib-John, but her only definitely
identified child was Constantine Dukas (by Michael "Parapinaces" Dukas) who
was betrothed first to princess Anna Comnena, the author, but then married
to Helen, daughter of Robert Guiscard, but apparently died without children
(probably before consummation of the marriage).

I have formerly advanced a speculation that Parapinaces and Martha-Mary
also had a daughter who became an ancestor of the Palaeologi, but this was
based on scant and ambiguous evidence.
