To Ms Shrull, Mr. Crabtree: this "I am ashamed" mantra is an extremely self
indulgent bit of spewing. It seems that between the 'shame' prounouncements
and the reverberations of 'stupid', we are enduring the psychological
machinations of the:'it's all about me' set. phs

Intolerance is what this administration, and, I'm sorry to say, about
half the U.S. population, are all about. As for Ed, I'm not "ashamed"
because I backed a loser (come to that, I didn't back Kerry at all, I
merely opposed Bush and everything he stands for -- as did, be it
noted, Patrick Buchanan, a man not known for his liberalism); what I
*am* ashamed of are the administration and the forces of hatred and
demagoguery it rode in on, of its staggering blend of arrogance and
ignorance, and of the massive damage it's doing domestically and
abroad. As for others, I'm sure that some people would be very
pleased indeed if all those who disagree with and differ from them
would "just quietly leave the country." This looks to me like a naked
admission of what I take to be a core attitude of one wing of the
Republican party: 'people who aren't like me, don't like the things I
like, do the things I do, say the things I say, and believe the things
I believe, should simply disappear.' Very un-American.

And that's all *I* have to say on the subject.

It always amazes me how so-called conservatives who claim to love this
country are so anxious to do away with its institutions - free speech,
protection of minority viewpoints, peaceful co-existence with those
who hold views different from their own. My experience has shown me
that, although there are crazies & idiots on all facets of the
political spectrum, the conservatives are less American in their
attitude than the liberals. Further, when the truth comes out about
whatever event or situation, it has almost always been that the
liberal interpretation was the correct one. Try to live up to the
highest standards of America rather than displaying an intolerance
that would be more understandable in...medieval...times. Also do the
math: there was absolutely no mandate. If Bush really won, it was NOT
by a landslide.

We have a right to vote for whomever we want, that doesn´t make us
anything but free.

That's the ideal we were all taught. I agree in regard to the
name-calling and hostility. We also have a right to have our votes
counted fairly and to get to the polls without intentional disruption.
It is now turning out that in at least one Ohio precinct voters were
not allowed in the building because of a supposed "alert level 10
terrorist threat" (the highest level). It turned out to be a lie and
the people who told it had been in charge of that polling place and
were Republicans. At another precinct there were at least 10,000 more
votes for Bush than there were voters eligible to vote there. Wherever
the main electronic voting apparatus was being used, a large number of
screens informed voters that they had just voted for Bush no matter
who they had actually voted for. In many parts of the country voters
were telephoned and told that their polling place had been moved -
only Democrats were called. It was a lie and many of these people were
trying to vote after work and never got to their original, correct
polling places. Polling places in poor and ethnic minority communities
throughout the US were given only one or two machines for electronic
voting, resulting in lines that required waiting for up to 8 hours. If
you were a student or voting on your way to work or disabled, you
could not vote. Thousands of disabled and other voters who had
requested absentee ballots never received them. Those that were able
to do so attempted to go to a polling place for a provisional ballot,
as the law requires. In many areas they were told that there were no
provisional ballots or, in Ohio, were told that the provisional
ballots would not be counted. Thousands of absentee ballots were
received from one area before the deadline but sat around on someone's
desk until after the deadline. In spite of the fault being with an
election worker, these votes were discarded. Leaflets were scattered
throughout large precincts saying that if any member of your family
had ever been jailed or if you had ever received so much as a driving
citation, you were not eligible to vote. Of course that is untrue. So
far in every instance where cheating has been found, it has been the
pro-Bush people. I'm not making this up although it is difficult to
find these accounts in the major media. CNN discussed some of it and
it is being given a great deal of attention by alternative media such
as Pacifica Foundation. If people who run polling places, count the
votes, contact voters, etc. are going to use these kinds of tricks, we
obviously are not a free country after all. And to the poster who
wants to know whether or not we should have reacted to 9-11...remember
that the aggression against Iraq was planned *before* 9-11 and that
Iraq had nothing to do with that event. So why are we there? Sorry,
TAF, but, as our president would say, "this is where we is happening
to be".

Even had I not explicitly committed myself to saying no more on this
subject, I would decline, in principle, to answer you in a
point-by-point way, as you make it clear that you have a *very*
different notion of what makes a good citizen (and, apparently, a
number of other things) than I do. Since these notions reduce -- as
do all systems of belief and reasoning -- to 'given' definitions and
postulates that can be accepted or not, but never proved -- it follows
that no meeting of the minds is possible here. (A more general point
could be extracted from these remarks -- which can be expanded, in
fact, to universal application.) In short, I reject, with more than a
little disgust, the definitions and postulates on which your views are
based, as I'm quite sure you would mine. I learned 25 years ago, as a
Harvard undergraduate, that argument in such cases is bootless for the
participants, and seldom if ever enlightens or persuades bystanders.

These insights are not, naturally, original to me. Bertrand Russell,
some 75 years ago, wrote a penetrating overview of the philosophy of
Friedrich Nietzsche, which he concluded by noting that (a) Nietzsche's
views were internally consistent, *given his axiology*, but that since
Russell (b) *didn't share* Nietzsche's axiological structure, his
recourse was that available to all philosophers in such situations:
to note that the opposing view derives logically from its axiological
underpinnings, but that since acceptance of those underpinnings isn't
not shared, one is entitled to shrug one's shoulders and walk away
from what one finds abhorrent.

I daresay Todd would regard this as pontificating, but I'm writing in
deadly earnest, and as clearly as I can (in a hurry, anyway), about
something that affects us all, even when the subject is ON topic: the
nature of argument, and one major reason why people can't agree.

I was initially under the impression that Bush had won fair and square
until some of the evidence about the Ohio polls came out from
trustworthy sources like Keith Olbermann, who started reporting about
the voter fraud, such as people voting completely Democratic except
for voting for Bush as President, which is obviously completely
inconsistent. I, personally, had participated in the early voting,
which is something all states should consider, because it would give
more people a chance to get the polls. My state voted for Bush as a
whole, but elected in landslide victory a Democrat for Governor, who
is a good man, and his father, also a politican, was a family friend
of my great-grandfather and extended family.

I really fear this country is becoming a christian fundamentalist
theocracy. These fundamentalists are against personal freedoms and
believe everyone should believe what they believe. I am sure I am not
the only one who heard instances of Republicans saying that protesters
and the like should be kicked out of the country, because they are
speaking out against the government. But wait a minute, isn't that
exactly what Bush is claiming to be fighting for in Iraq, the right of
people to have different opinions about the government and not be
punished for it?

Because you excerise your rights to disagree with the government's
policies doesn't mean that you are un-American, it means you are
excersing a cherished American right.

Unfortunately President Clinton, who in my estimation was one of the
greatest presidents the USA has ever had, was demeaned by the crazed
religous right, becuase of the Lewinsky scandal. There is nothing at
all wrong with belonging to a religon faithfully, but when it makes
you narrow-minded and hateful of other people with different views and
values it becomes a negative. I liked the idea of Rev. Al Sharpton for
President, although Governor Dean was my first choice. In France a few
years back a French President's funeral was attended by his wife and
his mistress. Over the centuries kings and leaders had many mistress,
and it has nothing to do with their ability to govern, a fact which
was never brought into question until modern times. Not that I'm
saying they should have mistresses, but if they do it's not a national
crisis, it's a personal family matter.

Yep.

That clumsy image is just as confused as the rest of his babble.

He obviously doesn't know what either a FACET or a SPECTRUM is -- or he
wouldn't combine the two words in that hilariously clumsy image.

A JUVENILE no doubt -- playing with words and ideas, which he can't
fully grasp.

thank you Ed Crabtree de Missouri. I agree. I wish all ashamed
Americans
would just quietly leave the country.
