Looking for Thomas Mikkelsen b. 1850 Middlefart, Denmark

Sorry for the crosspost. The answer may involve Schleswig-Holstein
research so I thought it appropriate.

I'm looking for strategies here so any suggestions would be appreciated.

In 1906 my great-grandmother Catharina Petersen, a widow in Chicago,
married Thomas Mikkelsen. She entered his information in her family bible
along with entries for her late husband and children: Thosmas [sic]
Mikkelsen, born in Middlefart, Denmark, March 31, 1850.

First document I have for him is his passenger manifest in 1887 where
he's bound for Chicago; the surname is spelled Michelsen there and he's
37 years old. His place of departure is listed as Flensburg,

His first marriage was in Flensburg to Helen Cecilia Sievertsen in 1874.
They had four children and emigrated to the USA in 1887. She returned
that same year to Flensburg and they divorced. Over the space of a decade
the kids returned to Thomas in the USA.

Using http://www.arkivalieronline.dk (which has images of church and
census records) I searched births and confirmations for Middlefart,
Odense. Nothing for Thomas. In fact there are no apparent
Mikkelsen/Michelsen births there from 1843 to 1855.

The 1850 census for Middlefart shows Michel Michelsen (46) and wife
Gjertrud Greve (also 46) and their six children born between 1829-1843.
It's tempting to imagine that Thomas, born a two months after the 1850
census, could be theirs, but there's no birth record to back this up. No
confirmations for that surname during 1860-1866, when Thomas (if born
there) would have been roughly the right age.

There's a Christian Michelsen, born in Middlefart on 12 Oct 1855 to
Johannes Michelsen and Karen Holdt, confirmed 13 years later, but it's
the wrong name and certainly the wrong birth info if we were to assume
this was Thomas...too big a leap, in any case.

Trying http://ddd.dda.dk/ddd_en.htm (an index of census records) this
time I searched the 1860 census, every available county in Denmark for a
male Mi%elsen, no first name, for a child from 1-20 years old. No Thomas
of the right age. I found only:

- Thomas Mikkelsen, 5, Aalborg, Horsens sogn
- Thomas Mikkelsen, 6, Stautrup Bye, Kolb, Ning, Aarhus
- Thomas Christian Mikkelsen, 4, Allesø, Lunde, Odense
- Thomas Mikkelsen, 5, Boes Bye, Hjelmslev, Skanderborg

No Thomas Mikkelsen found in Middlefart of the right age.

Can someone suggest what I should do next? There are hundreds of towns in
Odense and I'd hate to have to search them all on Arkivalieronline,
especially if the family info is completely wrong and he's not there at
all.

My only thought is to see whether I can find an 1870s Flensburg marriage
record for him which might list birthplace and parents' names, but I
don't think I can do that online, and I'm not sure the right microfilm
would be available in the USA.

Any suggestions would be most gratefully received.

By the way, if it inspires anyone, I have a web page for him with all
the info I know, not to mention photos:

http://sakionline.net/familypage/mikkelsen.shtml

Thanks in advance.

There are too many Michelson:

In 2001 there were
632 Michelson and
632 Michelsen but
61 Mikkelsen
in the German phone directory!

You need the help of someone living near the city of Flensborg, as I
certainly believe they'll have access to church records up until year
1900 at their city archives.

I know of at least one person, you'll probably be lucky to ask, so
I'll suggest a repost on this forum:

Thanks, Henning. You're right, too many Michelson/Mikkelsen folks, and
probably no one in the phone book would have the slightest idea how to
proceed. A more rare surname might have a chance...might! But I think
exploring the Flensburg records might be a better choice for this search.

Thanks for the response.

I have a month and year for his first marriage (January 1874) so this is
probably the best route, you're right.

Thanks for this info. I'd forgotten about this resource. I posted the
query to the Rootsweb Denmark mail list but got no response. I'll try
this one.
