"Sand"

Can anyone tell me if there's a meaning, beyond our English
"sand" (which generally has no nutritional value for crops or
animals), in Norwegian or Old Norse for the term "sand"?

I notice that there are a number of places and farms that have this as
part of their name. My logic is that there must be another meaning,
if there are crops or animals there.

The soil/earth/ground doesn't have to be ALL sand, only sandy. Good for

growing potatoes.......
also, a prominent beach on the farm may be the reason for the name.
