Omley, Norway?

Can anyone tell me where Omley, Norway is? The name could be badly
misspelled.

I have a name, Martha Evensdotter, b. 1825 in Omley Norway, also the
abbreviation Amlid. She emigrated to the US by 1845.

The closest I could find in the 1801 census of Norway is Gard: Amlien
Store in Sokn: Toten, Fylke: Oppland. There was an unmarried man 25
years old, named Even Tomassen.

Aamlid --> possibly Åmli. "Aa" or in modern writing Å (A-ring)
is a Norwegian character pronounced like "oh".

Åmli is a municipality in SW Norway, not too far from Kristiansand.
They even have a municipal genealogist who can be contacted by
people looking for roots in their municipality:

Could probably also be a farm name.

Btw - emigration before 1845 means a very early emigration. The first
emigration group was in 1825, and only a few hundred people a year
left Norway in those early years. The main part of the emigration was
after the US Civil War, with a peak in the 1880s and in the early 1900s:

I agree with Stein, I think it is Åmli in
Aust-Agder county.

If the link in causing trouble, go to

and you'll find:

The name Lolsen/Loelsen was new to me, but there
is a Torbiøn Lølsen in the 1801 census in Omblie.
Here we have the Norwegian ø - "o slash" - that
can indeed be transcribed as oe or o.

Could it be that Even L Olsen has been accidentally syncopated to Even
Loelsen?

That seems to be a farm: Amlien Greater ("Store" is "Great", i.e., there
might be a smaller Amlien, as well (Amlien Lille)

However, I'd rather tend to agree with the suggestion Åmli in
Aust-Agder.
