Generations Family Tree 8.5.1

Legg inn av Jack Ross » 31 okt 2004 21:11:01

At one time I saw, I think on this forum, some postings from a person that
runs a discussion group on Generations Family Tree software. Can anyone
enlighten me as to where this might be. Thank you in advance.

For all Generation users I would recommend the following web site
http://users.sisna.com/mhobart/Generati ... 0Tips.html which
gives loads of hints, tips, FAQs, plus patches.

Further there is a mailing list (run on similar lines to this one) where you
can post questions specifically about Generations to try and find others
that have managed to get their way around problems similar to those you may
be experiencing. To join send an empty email to the following address
generations-subscribe@weymouthtech.com

Regards
Gillian

I haven't tried the program since before Sierra abandoned it. Is there
a place where one can get a copy free? As I recall it had some
features I really liked.

But I didn't like Sierra putting stuff all over the HD which couldn't
be changed and was tough to remove.

Hugh,

I picked up a copy on Amazon.com for $9 a couple of months ago.

The product line was sold by Sierra to Genealogy.com and they
distributed two releases: Generations Family Tree and Generations
Family Tree Plus, through Broderbund. Both of those were at v8.5a
(very similar to the final Sierra v8.5.1 post). They did fix the
problem with the Easytree color box fill palette under Windows XP.
There is a patch for that release on the genealogy.com website in the
Generations support areas to fix a problem the v8.5a release had with
printing from Easytree.

The product is still owned by Genealogy.com so it is not available
free. It appears that they intend to do no further work with it (once
again Genealogy.com buys a competitor and shortly thereafter kills it
off, sigh....)

I have seen some 'value-bundle' packages from Broderbund in computer
stores (e.g. CompUSA) containing the software and one does see it on
eBay. When buying on eBay look carefully to see which version you are
buying.

As Dave and I continually say here, Reunion for Macintosh is more than
enough reason to change platforms. The Generations files do import as
well as GEDCOM.

I will mean that you will have to put in a lot more time at genealogy
though for you will no longer have the excuse of having to restart,
reinstall, upgrade your virus software, fight worms, trojans or viruses.
