Log in loop

Legg inn av Kathryn M Rogers » 26 sep 2004 14:22:49

Hello Listers,

I have recently developed a problem with my log in to XP. The computer boots
up, the icons on my log in screen appear, but when I try to log in, there is
an attempt with some music and a quick glimpse of wallpaper, then the
computer immediately says it is logging off and goes back to the log in
screen. Has anyone any ideas on how I can get my computer working again
without losing all my data on the hard drive. Any help much appreciated.

While not definitely your problem, this sounds pretty close to one of

the viruses/worms that was prevalent recently. Have you tried booting
int "Safe Mode." (Hold the F8 key during startup, and select "Safe Mode"
from the menu that appears.)

If that gets you up in the "Safe Mode" screen, run your antivirus
program and see if that sheds some light on the problem. Unfortunately,
that being said, I am guessing that you either are not running an
antivirus program or it's signature database is grossly out of date as
it should, if up to date, have caught any virus before it had a chance
to do its dirty work.

Take a look at

and see if that looks like the issue.

Doug,
Thankyou for your suggestion. I have in fact tried the safe mode with no
success. I am running Nortons antivirus 2004 so if it is a virus I will be
very disappointed in Nortons.

Hello Listers,

I'd like to thank those of you who offered suggestions for my log in loop
problem. My computer had to be rebuilt but my techie was able to save my
data to another computer so all my dead rellies are safe and well. We still
do not know what the cause was and if and when it will happen again. Moral
of the story as usual is to back up regularly. I would be interested (and
very sympathetic) if anyone else encounters this problem.

Your symptoms are usually related either to a virus/worm or a buggered
startup file. That's why I originally suggested trying to boot in Safe
Mode, which bypasses at least some of the normally-loaded startup stuff
and probably a virus as well. It still sounds like a startup file, just
not one bypassed by Safe Mode.

You have just proved the point about the dangersof Anti-Virus programs.

You have one installed, so you believe you are safe, and let your guard
down.

AV programs guard against known threats, which means that even if you update
regularly you remain vulnerable to each new threat for a short time.
