Recommendations for Mac software

Legg inn av Daniel MacKay » 1. november 2006 kl. 2.39

Hi.

If you use and love a genealogy program for the mac, could you please
write a note about it? I'm switching from Gene, which only runs on OS
9, and I don't know what to switch to.

Many thanks.

Switch to Family Tree Maker 16 (get the FTM 2006 single cd discounted
with update on line to FTM 16) running on OEM WinXP Sp2 running on
Parallels running on dual core intel mac OS 10.4.8

I found Reunion 8 clunky and limited in window size on a big screen
not really a proper MAc OS GUI interface but like an oldfashioned card index

Heredis the same

once you have WinXP on Parallels
there are many many more freebies and budget programmes you can run on
a virtual machine
and you get two machines for the price of one - saving cpu, memoory
chip and electricity costs

One english borugh is running 40 WIn** VM Virtual machines (replacing
40difficult to maintain heritage machines) on 5 large modern severs
saving about UK £18000 a year in electicity costs

a greener planet in fact

I love using Gene and I have Reunion 5 as well, neither of which will
run on OSX on the new Macs so I will have to upgrade when I buy a new
Mac.

It is a great pity that David and Diana Eppstein have not rewritten
Gene to run on OSX. It creates the best family tree charts of any
genealogical program I have seen.

Sad too that Apple has stopped the use of OS9 but I suppose one cannot
stop progress or the need to sell new operating programs and
applications.

You are three generations behind the current version of Reunion and
there have been many great improvements that includes family tree charts.

LOL
well your part of USA was always a bit slow to accept new ideas :-)

Virtual Machines are now state of the art

save a lot of electricity too
computers are a tool not a religion

so get a good uptodate tool box

Parallels is updated today as well
even easier to install Win XP or Vista
( I will give viist a year and update in 2008 )

some municipal data centers are running as many as 40 heritage systems
on VMware as images - on 4 or 5 modern servers
saving big money on power and maintenance
keeping taxes down too

Smiley or not...that is an insulting and inappropriate generalization.
I'm disappointed that some people think it's amusing to make fun of
where someone is from. Did you get to tell your parents where to live
before you were born?

the human rights history of Alabama . . .

Civil Rights Movement 1955-1965: The Montgomery Bus Boycott

State ... That evening, a group of ministers and civil rights leaders
had a meeting to ...

Civil Rights Movement 1955-1965: Birmingham
In 1963, Selma, Alabama, was a small town of about 30000 people.
.... All you had to do was be black. And they hospitalized probably
fifteen or twenty folks. ...
http://www.watson.org/~lisa/blackhistor ... selma.html

I was 20 years old in Uk in 1956 and saw all the pictures

In Alabama, a typical registration process for an African-American
citizen went something like this:

In the rural counties where most folk lived, you had to go down to the
courthouse to register. The Registrars Office was only open two or three
days each month for a couple of hours, usually in the morning or
afternoon. You had to take off work — with or without your employer's
permission — to register. And if a white employer gave such permission,
or failed to fire an African-American who tried to vote, he could be
driven out of business by economic retaliation from the Citizens Council.

On the occasional registration day, the county Sheriff and his deputies
made it their business to hang around the courthouse to discourage
"undesirables" from trying to register. This meant that Black women and
men had to run a gauntlet of intimidation, insults, and threats just to
get to the Registration office. Once in the Registrars Office they faced
hatred, humiliation, and harassment from clerks and officials.

The Alabama Application Form and oaths you had to take were four pages
long. It was designed to intimidate and threaten. You had to swear that
your answers to every single question were true under penalty of
perjury. And you knew that the information you entered on the form would
be passed on to the Citizens Council and KKK.

Many counties used what they called the "voucher system." You had to
have someone who was already a registered voter "vouch" for you — under
oath and penalty of perjury — that you met the residence qualification
to vote. In some counties this "supporting witness" had to accompany you
to the registrars office, in others they were interviewed elsewhere.
Some counties limited the number of new applicants a registered voter
could vouch for in a given year to two or three. Since no white voter
would dare vouch for a Black applicant, in counties where only a handful
of African-Americans were already registered only a few more each year
could be added to the rolls. And in counties were no African-Americans
were registered, none ever could because they had no one to vouch for them.

In addition to completing the application and swearing the oaths, you
had to pass the actual "Literacy Test" itself. Because the Movement was
running "Citizenship Schools" to help folk learn how to fill out the
forms and pass the test, Alabama changed the test 4 times in less than
two years (1964-1965). At the time of the Selma Voting Rights campaign
there were actually 100 different tests in use. In theory, each
applicant was supposed to chose one at random from a big loose-leaf
binder. In real life, some individual tests were easier than others and
the registrar made sure that Black applicants got the hardest ones.

the smell of corruption lingers on
just like the Holocaust will never be forgotten

Updated: 8:13 p.m. ET May 12, 2006

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Democratic Party leaders are wondering what to do
about a candidate for attorney general who denies the Holocaust occurred
and wants to “reawaken white racial awareness.”

Larry Darby, the founder of the Atheist Law Center, made an abortive bid
for the attorney general job as a Libertarian in 2002, but only recently
have his views on race and the Holocaust come to light.

He has no money for campaign advertising and has made only a few
campaign speeches, but garnered 12 percent support in the June 6 primary
in a poll of 400 registered voters last month.

I don't need a stranger who may have seen pictures lecturing me about
the sometimes unpleasant history of my city or my state. There's no
place in the world that hasn't got skeletons in its historical closet.
That *still* doesn't justify painting any person or group with a single
brush. You should've left well enough alone.

I'd suggest, Hugh, that you avoid commenting on things about which
you clearly know nothing and confine yourself to shilling for FTM. The
US North has as sordid a history regarding civil and human rights as
has the South or, for that matter, Great Britain.

http://www.geditcom.com/ I started with MacFamilytree but it really
messed my file. With GEDitCOM I was able to clean out the garbage.
Although it took several days, because MFT created new person for each
edit, so there were several partial copies for the same individual!
It also could not handle remarriages for widows other than a single
lifetime marriage etc. I guess now these bugs are fixed.
GEDitCOM works OK within the limits of GEDCOM standard.
With it's scripting language it's possible to create your own reports or
just modify the existing formats. Check the website, it's all there.
Main problem is lack of crossreferenced table book report capability.
The "Book Format" does one individual at a time only...

Cheers
