Family Tree Maker Family File

Legg inn av pat » 16 okt 2006 22:02:03

Like an idiot, I have not backed up one of my family files for several
months. Now I can not open the file. When I try, it says "Family Tree
Maker executable has encountered an error and has to close". I can see
the file on my list of files but just can't open it. Any suggestions
or do I just go back to the old, old backup file. Help....

FTM makes an auto back up

.FTW is the working copy .FTM is the back up

once you get it open abck up the back up
then compres the file to clean it up

(you will be prompted to back up first)

Sounds more like the program, not your data files. Copy the whole

directory to a cd, that wil get your data off, then reinstall the
program exactly where it is, right over the top of the existing
program. If that works it may fix the problem. If you have another pc
that would work better.

In the "old" days back when I was still using FTM, that used to happen
fairly often among users who subscribed to the user list that Paul
Burchfield ran. Often, the solution was to send a copy of the file to
FTM support.... they had special tools to correct the problems.
Perhaps someone still has access to those tools at the current owner's
place.... maybe if you contacted them....?

If it's the exe file, it sounds like the programme rather than the family

file. FTM makes automatic backup files, with the tag .fbk, every time you
shut it down (the main file is .ftw). I would copy the fbk file into another
directory or onto a floppy, just to be safe, and then reinstall the
programme. Then try and open your file. If it doesn't work, try opening the
fbk file.

This should be a reminder to all of us to backup our data. We have
spent far too much time compiling it not to do frequent backups. I
backup every Sunday morning, just part of my routine.

When I taught a computer class, I always said, "There are two types of
people in the world, those who are going to lose data and those who
have lost data." You have just joined the second group.
