In practice, though, your FTM file will start to get very large and slow to
load/save long before you reach those kinds of limits. The inclusion of
photos really blows the size out quite quickly. A lot of people decide to
not store their photos in FTM when they realise what it does to the size of
their FTM file. Sticking with text data in FTM keeps the size much more
manageable.
For example, I am already experiencing very slow load/saves. According to
FTM 2005, the statistics for our largest database which has no photos and
was just compacted is:
File Size: 77936 KB (or 77 Megabytes or 77 Floppy Disks or 1/9th of a
CD-ROM)
Total number of Individuals: 16670
Total number of Marriages: 5515
Text Records: 1024909 (I think that includes all facts, notes and sources
since there is a 60-to-1 ratio with the number of individuals)
but I have seen that file grow to nearly twice that size over time (hence
the benefits of periodic compaction Tools -> Compact Files).
Of course, the speed of FTM will depend on how good your PC is (how fast is
the processors? how much memory? etc) so one can't generalise about when you
will observe performance beginning to degrade. But it is safe to say that
you will encounter problems long before you hit FTM's limit of a quarter of
a million individuals.

Re: Maximum individuals on FTM
PAF manages my 14,800 person database quickly and efficiently. I use
photos, but they are not stored IN PAF. PAF just stores the links to them.
They have their own folder. And PAF has few practical limits of any kind.
PAF Companion, a $9 add-on, can also handle irregular dates, and include all
spouses and children of each ancestor in ancestor reports.
