My Christmas wish-list (repost)

This list applies to everyone, altho some bits are already available in
some apps:

- Treeview charts for ancestors and descendants....simple line diagrams,
like the tree that you get for the contents of your hard drive

- basic details on front screens (b, m ,d ,bur) for family members

- some attention to editing techniques...there are some most inefficient
systems out there

- proper SQL features (FTM has the worst query system known to man...)

- and FTM need to learn the alphabet (Index of Individuals when in Use
Married Name mode is ill-sorted)

- simple connection charts to show how Bill relates to Mary or whoever

- On This Day (or week or month) lists to save ooops when you foget
something

- Trace facility - to be able to set some conditions (ie born on a
Monday) and have the db check all or part of your data

- Count names used, length of marriages (and number!), number of kids
and prepare a ranking table

- better adherence to GEDCOM "standards"...so many do not!

Then I will spend my hard-earned....

A file on _my_ hard drive has only one "parent", "grandparent", etc.
That's why those "line diagrams", as you call them, are simple. Now, if
each had to parents, 4 gparents, etc, the "simple" disappears.

Oh, and by the way--why would anyone other than an astrologer want to
know how many people were born on Monday?

Because of what you have posted, I think I will take a look at Legacy,
and won't be looking at any more of your posts.

Fair enough, but have a look at what it actually means. Go to

http://www.pcug.org.au/~pblair/ and find tview.jpg Double click to open it.

If you want to prepare a book or notes, these diagrams (which can be
amended to show extra info if required) are very good. This was actually
produced from Legacy data files...so, if I can do it, why not them?

Enjoy the Season

I enjoy acting as the Devil's Advocate, recognizing that you have the
right to requesting as you did, and you hold the future sale of one
program in your hands.

Only the better adherence to GEDCOM "standards" is attractive to me.
On a pure guess, admittedly with no available facts to guide me, I
would say that many, if not most, would agree with me. I'm reasonably
certain that the wish list of others would be considerably different
from yours. I think most genealogy programs respond to the "common
denominator".

Sorts are a problem. I want James "Hugh" Sullivan to sort in alpha
order. Whether I use " or [ or * or any other symbol it usually does
not.

The b, m. d and bur data are listed on the Legacy screen. I always
include those on any print out as they are common events for everyone
(sooner or later).

Legacy has a function to determine the relationship of individuals.

RootsMagic also has these functions but your approach previously has
concentrated on Legacy. That may because Sherry has responded and
Bruce has not. Be assured that neither is confrontational.

Hugh

Bottom line you still have the option to put your dollars in an
interest bearing account as opposed to buying another genealogy
program.
