Having installed my old FTM version 6 last night, I'm trying in vain
to search the information on the 15 CDs supplied with it (Family
Archives, etc). I suspect most of them will have nothing of much
relevance, but I'd like to be sure. Could an FTM user point me in the
right direction please? I'm sure it will prove embarrassingly obvious,
but it has me baffled right now!
When I click the tool icon on the extreme right of the toolbar,
'Family Finder (Search CD)', I get a small window containing the
message:
"Please insert a Family Archive CD in the CD-ROM drive and click
Retry. If you need information on purchasing the FamilyFinder Index
or other Family Archive CDs, please click".
It has 3 buttons: To Order, Retry, and Cancel. Retry does nothing. And
I obviously don't want to order them, as I have them already.
The only relevant info I can find in FTM Help is this:
"You can begin a search from any page of a Family Archive:
1. Click Search Expert.
etc"
But how do I get into 'any page of a Family Archive' to find this
'Search Expert'?
Another route I tried was via the 'Research Journal', but that failed
too. It's as if FTM cannot see the CDs. (I tried them in both my DVD
writer and CD writer drives; same results.)
Following the phone links to Broderbund Support got me a message
redirecting me to GSP, where a recorded message at GSP told me support
was now via the web site at http://www.gsp.cc. Tried that but came to a dead
end. Phone call to a human at GSP resulted in being told they didn't
support versions before FTM 11!

Re: FTM - reading CDs?
Pleased to say I sorted this a little later thanks.
Found a web page via http://gen.custhelp.com which led me to a rather
obscure solution that involved editing the FTM configuration file.
Turns out the program needed telling which CD drive to use.

It's probaboly just that FTM can't find your CD-drive.
Close FTM. Go to the folder that you have FTM installed in, and look
at the files in that folder. Find one named FTW.INI. Open this file
with notepad.
Scan the text looking for a line that reads: FamFinderCD=D:\ (the
letter "D" could be anything) and change the letter D to the letter
designating your CD drive.
Save the file with that one change, then restart FTM and see if you
can now access the CDs.

But Hugh, it takes probably 2 minutes to fix the problem by editing
the FTW.INI file. So at $60/hour, that's about $2.00. And from his
original post, it "looks" like he only wanted access to the CDs as a
reference....not any other use of the program. (Didn't FTM at one time
give away a program that would do that, so users wouldn't even have to
own FTM?). And count the time (he would have) wasted if he ordered the
program, then had to wait a week for delivery (even if the $30 was of
no consequence to him).
No, I think he did the right thing... I just wish I had seen his post
earlier and been able to stear him to the solution before he had to
search for it.
