FTM 2006 Trouble Inputting Characters

Legg inn av John Carruthers » 13 nov 2005 23:22:33

Dear List,
I am using FTM 2006. I have about 13,000 people in my file. Many of the
people have the same name so I distinguish them by calling them John {1}
SMITH, John {2} SMITH, John {3} SMITH, etc. The trouble is that after I have
entered several of these names I find that when I enter { I get ^ or when I
enter } I get "

In addition I have a Fact named # that I use to assign my own Relationship
Numbers. After I enter a few of these Facts I try to enter # as the name of
the Fact and I get /

Finally I like to add a suffix to names to show their migration, like John
SMITH, ENG>USA After I enter a few of these I try to enter > and I get a
period instead

In all of the of above situations I close my file and re-open the file and
the problem goes away, for a while, and then eventually re-occurs.

Does anyone know what is causing the wrong character to be input when I try
to enter { or } or # or > ?? Is there some danger that sooner or later when
I close a file and re-open the file that the problem will not/not go away?

I posted this problem on the FTM Mailing List some time ago but did not get
any response. So I am hoping for some help from this Newsgroup.

if you are entering a lot of data
backup then compact your file regualrly

which also works as an error checker
