FTM compatibility
I am upgrading to new computer and software. Was using Windows ME and FTM
ver 9.0. The question is can I use this version with Windows XP or do I
have to upgrade? If I have to upgrade are there any compatibility problems
with my data files?

You shouldn't notice any difference at all. FTM will install the same
way and your files will all be compatible and should copy over without
problem. Your data files will more likely be under an NTFS filesystem
than the current FAT32 one that is used now under WinME, but that is all
transparent to the application.

You don't have to upgrade, FTM ver 9 should work well with Win XP (I

version should read your old FTM ver 9 files with no compatibility
problems.
However.... it seems that the longer you use FTM the harder it is to
change, because of a LOT of incompatibility problems with other
genealogy programs. If you're satisfied with FTM then just stick with
version 9. If you're looking for any real improvements, then look at
other genealogy programs.

Re: FTM compatibility
I'm a bit of a novice where family tree programmes are concerned, but have
been getting on OK with FTM - up until now. My family tree has grown
considerably, and I'm finding it limiting when it comes to searching
through the records. What other progs do you recommend (if you are allowed
to mention them), and why?
Thanks

Karen,
Choice of a genealogy program is a matter of personal tastes, more
than anything else. You really need to use a program for a while to
decide whether you like it or not. Of course, with some programs, you
merely have to "start" them and you immediately don't like them.
That said, my choice and the one I use now is RootsMagic. But in the
past I've use FTM for a long time, and before that PAF. I've also
tried Roots, TMG, Legacy, and a few others. I've finally decided that
RM is the best compromise for me.... but you could well decide on a
different one. I do know that Legacy is very popular, so I'd recommend
trying it, even though I just couldn't make myself comfortable with
it. And if you are a very meticulous person, TMG might be the one for
you.

Re: FTM compatibility
Correct, RootsMagic's file format is dBase with FoxPro style indexes,
but doesn't use FoxPro. RootsMagic (and it's database engine), are
both written in straight C and C++.

Thank you Sherry, for that clarification. So Paul, it would seem that
you were correct in that Legacy does depend on MS continuing support
for Access. However, I still maintain (until again proven wrong) that
RM does not. (Bruce, where are you when we need you?)
