Windows 95

Legg inn av Gjest » 07 mar 2005 15:23:26

Folks:

I have a friend who has an older computer with Windows 95. All she wants to
use it for is e-mails to her family.

I am trying to help her and have tried to re-install Windows 95.

We get the following message:

Performed illegal operation

SUWIN caused a general protection fault in module MACXW4.DRV at
0015:00000031.

I have done a google search for this error but have not found it. Any help
would be appreciated.

Thanks
George

Take a look at
<http://support.earthlink.net/mu/1/psc/img/walkthroughs/windows_9x_nt/browsers/ie_5.0/2955.psc.html>

as it gives a clue that there probably is an issue with an ATI driver or the
installed version of DirectDraw.

In retrospect, it may be more complicated than that as you are getting the error in SUWIN which is the
installation process when the ATI driver is not available. That prevents an installation while using the
ATI. It's not clear as to why you are trying to re-install if Win95 is already on the computer. In any
case, assuming that the ATI was an add-in PCI video card that was installed later and that the original
connector for the monitor is still there on the back of the case, you may need to remove the ATI card and
use the other connector while installing. The ATI can be installed later. Here's some guidance on that
sort of thing.
