What Software?

Legg inn av GiGi » 04 mar 2005 22:31:01

Hey -
I just subscribed to this group and I was hoping someone could help me
with the best (and user-friendly) program to purchase for genealogy. I
am just starting this project of my genealogy although many in my
family have sent me their files. I have a lot of information already
to enter and start researching. I was hoping a good program would help
me organize and find out where the missing information is.
Any suggestions?

Learn to use google.
It is a search engine, helps you find things on the internet. In
particular, check out groups.google.com, which searches usenet, such as
previous answers to your questions.

Your choice of software will depend on what OS you are using. Choice of
genealogy software seems to depend a lot on personal preference, so try out
a few before settling on one.

Popular apps include;
for Mac: Reunion
for Linux: Gramps
for Windows: Legacy

I have used The Master Genealogist for a number of years and it is
excellent.

Get Legacy. Log on & look up their site. You can
download the standard version for free. I recommend the
5.0 deluxe with manual. I've used several genealogy
data bases but I feel this is easiest to use. Has to be
for me I still think of the "Big Chief Tablet" as high
tech.

Have a good serious look at Roots Magic. Check http://www.rootsmagic.com. There is
a free trial download.

This is not a complicated program with a lot of obtuse methods. I use it and
have used it's predecossor for many years.

I know, it is all in what you get used to but this program is very logical
in its interface.

Take a look here for comparisons but it's down to personal choice.

I would second this recommendation - TMG is excellent for people who
are computer literate.
