My Great Grandmothers brother, Peter Olsen (1877), emigrated from Norway to
USA in 1903. He had one son, Ernest Olsen, born October 13, 1913. I got some
help and found that Ernest Olsen died in 1999. He lived in Worcester,
Massachusetts. I'm trying to ind out whether he had any children. Any help
would be apreciated.

Re: Ernest Olsen, Worcester, Massachusetts
Without knowing for certain if Ernest was married, your best bet would
be to obtain his death certificate. You can order one at this address:
http://www.mass-doc.com/massachusetts_d ... ficate.htm
They do ask for the names of parents, including the maiden name of the
mother. From the 1930 Census for Massachusetts, it appears as if
Ernest's mother's name was Louisa Hodgkins (her brother Alfred is living
with them in that census). I'm not exactly sure what information would
be on Ernest's death certificate, but the ones that I'm familiar with
(North Carolina) do show whether or not the person was married, and the
name of the person (and sometimes relationship to the deceased) is
listed. In most cases, the death certificate information is provided by
a child or spouse of the deceased.
There is a fee for the death certificate, but they do have abstracts
available (for a fee as well) that can be e-mailed to you.
Good luck,

I know for sure that he was married. Her name was Ruby. Is the shortest path
still getting his death certificate?

Re: Ernest Olsen, Worcester, Massachusetts
Below is the address for the Worcester County GenWeb page. There is a
link there for joining a mailing list for Worcester County, as well as a
section on the website where people offer to do look-ups of various
records. The problem that you have is that modern records usually
aren't on-line, or abstracted -- someone has to go and look up the
records.
http://www.rootsweb.com/~maworces/
If you join the mailing list, you might be able to find someone who
lives in Worcester County who would be willing to look through birth
records to try to find Ernest's children (if he had any). Again, you
run into anothe problem in that from what I've read on the county GenWeb
site, those kinds of records are kept by the towns and the state, and
not on the county level. In the 1930 census, Ernest and his parents
were living in the town of Worcester.
Hope that helps,

Re: Ernest Olsen, Worcester, Massachusetts
I hit send too soon <grin>.
I wanted to add that perhaps someone here who knows more about
Massachusetts might know for certain how to dig up possible birth
records. I've done nearly all of my research in North Carolina, and
every state handles records differently.
