These 3 ladies are sisters of my great grandmother who was named Madeline.
I initially got the names from the census, thinking that they were nicknames.
However, for all 3 of the sisters their birth, marriage and death records give
the names "Annie, Mattie and Nellie." Is it safe to assume these are their
"real" names? Thanks

I do not agree with you.
They are Dutch First names!
And often Nettie is not an official name but a call-name (roepnaam in
Dutch).
An old-aunt of mine appears in the 1920 US census as "Nettie Speelman".
Her official name is however Jeanette Speelman-van Woudenberg.
Her call-name ( I hope that is correct English.....) is Nettie but her
offical name is Jeanette.
I think their English was not good enough to understand that they had to
give the official name!
Nellie could be Petronella, Annie from Johanna or something like that.

Yes, certainly!
In English it's a "nickname", but everybody knows what you mean when you say
"call-name".
I see many nicknames given in the censuses.
My grandmother was Anna Heiling, but she was known as Annie and Annie is what
was used on the census!

Re: Given Names: "Annie, Mattie, Nellie"
My great grandmother was born Frances, but the census records and
marriage license all listed her as Frankie (somewhat of a shock to me
since I knew her when she was old and didn't look like a tomboy to me).
