Has anyone purchased FTM 2005 Yet? Thoughts? Opinions?

Yes. I generally like it. One major problem - if you decide to populate
your file with reference numbers (a number assigned to each person) there is
no way to remove them except by deleting one at a time. If you have a
family file of almost 14,000 individuals as I, this task is rather huge.
Also, for some reason, there are spaces between letters in my "notes." FTM
techs had no explanation or cure. Sounds stupid that they allow you to put
in reference numbers without a way to delete them all at once. You can
check a box to not print the numbers but they're still there unless you
delete one by one.

Thanks for the info.

I've been using FTM 10 and the one thing I would like to see in FTM 2005 is
the ability to save or export directly to a web page, or html. Does 2005
have that capability?

EXPORT to GEDCOM, edit ged to remove ref#, re-save. create new database,
import improved GED, and go for it.

No, 14,000 isn't too big to handle in a GED.

I save to GED quite frequently. However, there is no way to remove the
reference numbers except one at a time. Once I get my file completely
cleaned, I'll save a master GED file. Thanks for the help, though.

It's possible in TMG and it looks like it can be done in the free Legacy 5.
Export your Gedcom which will contain the numbers. Then Import that Gedcom into
Legacy. Then Export a new Gedcom from Legacy without the numbers. Voila!

Or you might just want to continue using Legacy. :-)

That task is extremely easy to do if you use a text editor that has regular
expression search and replace capability. If you are going to be messing
with GEDCOM files very much and feel that you are proficent at changing a
GEDCOM it would be well worth the cost to get one.

For example if I were doing that change I would open the file in my text
editor that I use all the time, define a search and replace using a regular
expresssion like '% *REFN?*%' (thats find a start of line followed by any
number of blanks followed by REFN followed by any number of any characters
followed by an end of line) then I would blank out the replace with field
and click the search button. It finds the first one and asks to change this
one or all. I click the All button and (I'm not exaggerating here) in less
than 2 seconds it could remove all 14,000 easily and accurately.

Most source code editors almost always have that capability but the one I've
used for almost 15 years now is called Mult-Edit (http://www.multi-edit.com). You
might even find others that are cheaper or maybe even for free. What you
want is called regular expression searching capability.

With Legacy you can change reference numbers of pair of individuals or you
can renumber filling all missing RINs. Same for marriage numbers..

The response to my problem has been great. Too bad the techs at
Ancestry.com can't devise a solution. I thought when you wrote "logic"
there was a solution for every problem. Guess Ancestry.com folks haven't
learned that yet. I've always upgraded with FTM but this has been an
eye-opener when one considers the lack of support.

Can you export a family tree to a web page directly from FTM 2005?

Well, I guess I must have misunderstood the original query, but, I created a
dummy file, selected reference numbers, and noted that I had reference
numbers in the individuals list.

I then went to preferences and 'de-selected' reference numbers, and they
seem to have gone away.

I remember, a number of years ago, and a number of FTM upgrades ago
(probally around V3) I had selected reference numbers, and then decided I
didn't need them. As I recall, I just exported the entire file to an FTW
file. Opened a new blank file, made sure that reference numbers were not
selected, and then imported the the original file. Did not have reference
numbers.

I'm a little confused about this Family Tree Maker 2005 product.

I thought this program was made by Broderbund, but it doesn't seem to be
anymore (links on their web page are dead). Has this product changed hands
and been reworked? It certainly looks different. I am currently running
FTM 11. Are the ftw files compatible with this new 2005 version?

Thanks in advance for your help.

As I understand it, Broderbund once was a subsidiary and was bought out by
the folks who own Ancestry.com.

No problem with the FTW files from version 11 to 2005; even in reverse,
since there are orptions to save
the 2005 files in version11, 10, 9, 8...

I use both of them without any problems; but I decided to save the GEDCOM
files from v 11, because I found
problems with 2005 with Lehacy 5, BK 6 and even Pocket Genealogist for my
IPAQ 2010.

Thanks for the help, the interface looks so utilitarian now, it used to have
a personality of it's own before.

I assume it hasn't lost any of the features of FTM 11? Also can you install
both programs on the same PC?

Yes, on the same PC, and side by side in the System C repertory. I agree
with you that 2005 is
mostly (I underline it) cosmetics. There are few keyboard shortcuts, like
going from husband to wife;
it is a mouse job, believe me. They have not changed the 'irritant' (that's
French) moves like finding a child
for a couple: you do not get to the father's last name, but to the first
line of the index. One odd thing is that some
children seem to not have parents, even if they are in the Family Page: you
have to delete them then reinsert them. This looks like BK 5.2g !

But it seems to be worth all the new things they have put in it, although I
do not think I will ever use all of them.

Good luck

Claude
