Re: Family Tree Software
IMO the best of the best is The Master Genealogist, TMG, but it can be
hard to learn for new people. The learning curve is pretty steep,
there are just sooo many options that it can be overwhelming. It does
however let you do almost anything with the data once it is input. It
also imports data directly from most other Genealogy programs directly
into it, instead of going thru the Gedcom process. The Gedcom process
is a basic data sharing system but leaves ALOT of things out. TMG is
available as a demo here:
http://www.whollygenes.com/
I believe the easiest to use is Personal Ancestral File, PAF,
available for free from the LDS. It is almost intuative, for me, to
use and is the best cost of any!
It is available here:
http://www.familysearch.org/ go to order/download products, software
downloads-free, and it is the first item listed.
There are many other products but they are put out by major companies
and their contining software support is unknown. PAF will be supported
and updated just about forever, Genealogy is one of the LDS's
principles. TMG is done by a small company in Maryland and is written
by a Genealogist, so he puts his own desires into the program. He also
has an EXCELLENT support system and a news forum discussion group that
is quite active and helpfull.
I have a friend that uses Family Tree Maker, FTM, version 7.0, that
was giving her trouble, they also have a support system but it is a
huge company and instead of being able to fix the problem they
suggested that she start over re-entering over 11,000 people into a
newer version of their program. TMG will let you send them your data
file and they WILL fix it and you will be back up and running in a few
days!!! NO MATTER the version!! THAT is customer service!!!

Reunion for the Mac, TMG for the PC. If you want free for PC, PAF and
Legacy.
Opinions vary a lot, of course. Depends on what you have, what you
want to do, and how much you want to spend. I've got PCs and a Mac
at home, and use Reunion exclusively now; it's good enough to be an
excuse to upgrade to a Mac.

Re: Family Tree Software
I recommend "RootsMagic". It is very user friendly and easy to use. I also
have Family Tree Maker, PAF, Family Origin, and Legacy but RootsMagic is the
best for me.

I believe that in the UK Pedigree is very popular.
I use the shareware program Bothers Keeper from http://www.bkwin.com By definition
that's the best for me, as I'm used to it.
