Searching Ancestry's Databases

For those who subscribe or have access to Ancestry.com's genealogy
databases, if you are searching within a city directory database for a
surname and get a negative result, don't give up. I have found almost 50%
of the time that the surname I suspect should be listed is indeed there but
was missed/misinterpreted by Ancestry's optical character reader. Simply
use the Soundex search option and then select a hit with the first letter of
your surname. From there you can page through the alphabetical listings to
see if your individual is actually listed. Some users may already know
this, but I only learned not to take a negative result as gospel after about
six months of frustration.
