Help!! Hannah E Strachan - Scottish Records

Legg inn av Kay » 20 sep 2004 15:40:59

Hi Everyone. Ive just joined up. Have been researching my family tree for
the past 3 years. It takes up alot of my time since i get addicted at times.
Im in Perth, Western Australia. I have come up against a brick wall.

I am trying to find out some information on a Hannah E. Strachan. All i
know is that she was born in Scotland. She was a school teacher at a girls
boarding school in approx the 1930/40s. The School could possibly be a
quaker school but unsure? Hannah had a sister Edith Strachan. She had a
brother that died. There could have been other siblings that im not aware
of. Assuming that she would have been around 30 in 1930 i have been
searching for birth information for the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Can anyone suggest on where i could possibly find information on this person
or can someone help me. I would really appreciate any help that you can
give. Tearing my hair out here.

I would suggest that you start here http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/.
It is a pay per use site, but before you have to pay, on the bottom left of
their start screen is a good Beginners Guide.
I would then start with the 1901 census - fortunately the forenames are not
as common as some (try looking for Isabella!), and a hunt for a family might
turn up something. Have you looked here for birth certs? How many Hannah E.
Strachans did they have?
Remember that many people pronounce this name "Strawn" so don't forget to
check for spelling variations.

Can anyone suggest on where i could possibly find information on this
person
or can someone help me. I would really appreciate any help that you can

I can understand that - even if you find a birth cert, it's going to be hard
to establish that it's for the right woman without some sort of extra info.
Did she marry? Emigrate?

Hi Lesley

Thanks very much for your help. I will have a go at looking up that
website. I dont know for definite the name of the school but a relative
thought it was Pinewood school. There is a pinewood but it was a boys
boarding school so thats not the one. As far as i know Hannah Strachan
didnt emigrate. A family member said that she could have had a lover (same
sex) so that wouldnt help at all. There are just to many unknowns
unfortunately.

Thanks for your help.
Kay

I'm wondering if your Strachan people might not be the ones on this page -
http://www.rootsweb.com/~nswsdps/s/ausds620.htm
I know the info is for Australia, but there is an Edith and Hannah listed
and the dates would be about right (age at time of death)
Good luck with your research.

Maybe try going further back than Hannah's generation.

In the mid-1800s, there were a large number of Strachans on the Kintrye
peninsula in Argyllshire, Scotland. Maybe you'll find some clues there.

Barb in Ottawa, Ontario.
