How find NYC burough from address?

Legg inn av Chris Shearer Cooper » 14 sep 2004 00:35:51

Several of the children in a family I'm researching were born in NYC; one on
Huron St. in Greenpoint, one on Henry St. in Williamsburg, then two in
Brooklyn, then two on Bayard St. in Greenpoint/Williamsburg.

Finding birth certificates for them depends on knowing whether or not these
addresses were in "one of the five boroughs of New York City" and I don't
know exactly what a "borough" is, or how to determine if those addresses are
in one of them (except for the two that say they were born in Brooklyn).

Can any NYC folks out there drop some advice on me?

Thanks!
Chris

A borough is a political entity, in New York it is one of five
administrative units. Manhattan, the Bronx, Brooklyn, Queens, Richmond (or

Staten Island). Today each is a separate county. New York county, Bronx
county, Kings county, Queens County, Richmond county. Generally one can
only tell which borough with a map or experience. Because the city of New
York was originally many smaller villages and towns, those names have
survived as neighborhood names and are still used in postal addresses. I
suspect that the U.S. Post Office would like to stop using those names.
In your case Williamsburg and Greenpoint are in Brooklyn so all of the
places are in present day Brooklyn. Remember that Brookly was a separate
city intil the unification of Greater New York in 1899.
Hope this helps
