Emigrants to the USA- Passenger Lists

Legg inn av Geoff Pearson » 29 aug 2004 11:56:32

I have recently found that Christopher SHACKLADY - whom I had lost -
left Essex sometime after his marriage to Rebecca Cardinal in 1819 and
turned up in Troy, New York - shown in the 1860 census.

He doesn't show on my Mormon Immigration Index CD list, nor other
passenger lists on Ancestry (although he and his family show in all
subsequent censuses). Are there any other records which might show when
he travelled to the USA?

Hello Geoff,
You can find a list of available passenger lists indexes by port here...

Finding Passenger Lists 1820-1940s (arrivals at US Ports)

Good luck with your search.

Regards,
Joe

Ships passenger lists to New York are not indexed from
1847-1892. (although a CD ROM does provide an index to
1850)

Passenger lists *are* available on microfilm so if you know
a date of arrival or a ship name you can order the
microfilm
or have NARA
do a lookup for you.

For a complete list of film numbers (NARA or FHC) for ships
going to New York after 1820, see

http://olivetreegenealogy.com/ships/fil ... york.shtml

Find your date (year, month, day if known) and write down
the NARA or Family History Centre film number you need.

The staff of the National Archives will undertake a search
of the original records for a fee. You can order National
Archives (NARA) forms online at

http://www.archives.gov/global_pages/inquire_form.html

You might also want to check my ongoing project to fill in
the 1847-1892 index gap for passenger arrival records in
New
York.

This project consists of 3 sets of records:

1. NY Times extracts for ship arrivals and passenger names

2. Images (and some accompanying transcripts) of actual
passenger lists in this time period

3. NY Almshouse records for 1855-1858

The complete index of NY Times years and shipping news
extracts is at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/nytimes.htm

You can also search the NY Times online for a small fee
through other sites. There are links at the above URL.

Images of ships passenger lists for these Unindexed NY
years are online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/

The Almshouse Records start at
http://www.rootsweb.com/~ote/ships/ny_alms1855.htm

period at

He might have traveled to the US via Canada, which opens a big kettle of
fish! There are 13 Shacklady entries in the Canada411 directory - see

Thank you for this. The world centre for SHACKLADYs is Liverpool - and
I would expect the bulk of those now in North America to come from there
but my tribe come from Essex. I am trying to establish (separate
exercise) how they came to be in Essex - and I assume they came from
Lancashire at some point but it is not proving easy.

Have you looked at the 1860 census? The Christopher Shacklady in the census
was born in England ca 1823 and his wife's name is Elizabeth. He might be a
son of your Christopher but he doesn't match the Christopher you're looking
for.

Thank you for this. Yes Christopher William Shacklady is the son of the
one I am working on. Their burials are recorded in Troy, New York. But
when did Christopher 1st arrive in NY?
