I'm sure this has been asked before, but what's your opinions
of Ancestry.com's subscription services?

I don't pay for it, I access it at my local LDS family history center.

What would you want to search for? I found their census subscription
worthwhile for the year during which I looked up and recorded all the
individuals with the particular surname I am searching. Continuing to
subscribe isn't as cost-effective as it originally was for me, but I have
not dropped it yet. Maybe this isn't what you're after from Ancestry. If
you're like many folks, you could probably extract almost everything you
want from the free 30-day trial Ancestry offers now and then. I would
recommend that route. Then ask you question again, and be more specific.
Then someone will probably be able to suggest your best option.

As my family group continues to expand, I find myself researching new names
quite often which is why I continue my subscription.

There is a library within 15 minutes where I could use Ancestry.com, but
since I sometimes spend hours at a time, my husband said he would prefer
me to get the census subscription. I'm glad he did - I can access the
database any time of the day or night without leaving home (which I will
appreciate even more this winter.) ...... lulu

Marginal at best. There are way too many duplications in the data, limited
sort options, and anything that comes out is not available unless I am
willing to fork over another $40 or so. The Newspapers are really a joke. I
cancelled the subscription after just after 2-3 weeks. They were good about
it and reasonably prompt in crediting my credit card. The census in Heritage
Quest is much better and easier to use. I get that through my public
library. I probably will renew my subscriptions but with regret and
hesitation.

I couldn't really do without Ancestry.Com. I use it everyday that I'm
working on family history in one way or another. I do use it in conjunction
with RootsWeb, HeritageQuest, FamilySearch and the USGenWeb Project sites,
however.

I find it to be a great tool. No, I don't like the cost of it, and I don't
like the way Ancestry.Com does business, but I still use the service to my
great advantage.

It does carry some censuses that HeritageQuest doesn't carry, and it does
allow me to browse and search the census pages of a given area. This has
been immensely important to me when I know that surely something has been
misspelled, etc., and I just need to find the family by the every-image
search method. Sometimes indexing has not been done well, and I have to
go in and do the find myself.

With Ancestry.Com, I can narrow searches by birthplace, by age, etc.
Sometimes, if a name is unusal, I search by first name in a state or area.
Sometimes I have searched by age. I have even searched by an occupation
keyword. (I've had some interesting times searching the 1880 census by
keyword "prostitute." They actually listed that as an occupation in many
places, particularly boomtowns. But I digress. . . )

Wildcard searches are important to me because of strange misspellings of
some of my family surnames and first names, and I don't think you can do
that on HeritageQuest.

If I don't find something in HeritageQuest, and I can often go into
Ancestry.Com and find it, or vice versa.

The Social Security Death Index is really helpful in finding more recent
relatives' birth and death dates-----those that were born after the 1930
census. Also particular state death and marriage indexes are helpful in
Ancestry.Com also.

The family tree component has been helpful to me many, many times, even
though I do find errors. But it can be very good as a starting point, and
it can put me in contact with others who are researching the same family.
If the GEDCOM is available, that can be a real find (or not, depending on
accuracy).

Recently I have come to use the World War I registration card database with
success. These registration cards not only show the person's actual
signature, but also eye color, hair color, and general description of height
and build. They list their permanent address and that of their nearest
relative, as well as their occupation and their employer. Depending of the
version of the card being used (I think there were four), you can also get
their birthplace and the birthplace of their father.

Bear in mind, I am doing all my research in the United States. If I were
doing British research, I know that would fall under the category of "extra
cost." But for my uses, I don't need to pay extra fees. I just hope
Ancestry.Com doesn't restructure this.

I have had the service for a year, and I will definitely renew.

Warmest Regards,

Donna
