I have been a Family Tree Maker user since version 1.0 and am currently using
version 11. I recently purchased FTM 2005 and after I installed it I found out
that I could not print out note pages unless you cut and pasted the information
into a word processor. I Don't know about the rest of the FTM users but being
able to print out the note pages of my many tyhousands of text files is one of
the main features of the older versions. As far as I am concerned they ruined
what I thought was the best genealogy program on the market. If you can't
print out your data without using another program what good is it. Just
thought you other FTM users might want to know this befor you spent good money
on a worthless program.

Re: FTM 2005
I also purchased FTM 2005 as an upgrade from version 11 and was really
disappointed in it and let the company know. I could not do family searches
as in past versions. It also was useless, in my opinion. The free version
from Family Search is very similar and can do most of the same things. I
restored my system to the day before installation and sent back the new
version for a refund. I only lost two files and had GEDCOMS of them so I
was no worse for the wear, only frustrated.

I've been using various versions of FTM for several years without any
problems. Intrigued by these postings I, too, downloaded a copy of Legacy.
There are a couple of things, like being able to add a title or university
degree to an individual, that I really like. At the same time I find a lot
of it is not intuitive. I manged to have my mother married to both my father
and grandfather. Just a slip in the wrong place, but it took me a while to
find out how to correct it. Not difficult after you find out how to do it.
I'll keep trying to learn Legacy, but I like to take a copy of a simple tree
with me to the FHC for reference and I haven't found a way to produce a tree
in Legacy.

I also purchased FTM 2005 and although I like it, I can't get it to work
properly. Their technical support has been trying to help me by email, but
after about 7 messages we haven't had much success. Because of all the
problems I searched for and found this site.
John suggested downloading a free version of Legacy, which I did. But I
find
it much harder to understand than FTM and the documentation is very wordy
and confusing. I've only spent a couple of hours on it and don't know if
it
is worthwhile spending any more time trying to learn something that might
not be satisfactory.

With Family Tree Maker's new automatic Web Search running in the background,<< I will certainly disable that - unless it handles
locations much btter th<n the old one
Publish your tree on the Internet
Share your findings on a FREE User Home Page on Genealogy.com. A home page wizard makes the process a snap - just choose which
individuals you want to include and the page will be created in minutes.

Step 5 - Ready to print!
FTM 2005:

Step 2- Choose NOTES
Step 3 - Choose your individual(s) (At this step you can
choose as many individuals as you wish. Choosing more than
one will batch print notes)
Step 4 - Ready to print!
The big difference is that in FTM 2005 you do not have to
pre-select the individual you want. That *saves* you a
step!
I think you may have a little bit of resistance to actually
trying the program and seeing that it can actually save you
steps.

That's way to much effort and a waste of time just to print
a page of notes. It makes the program way to clunky for my
taste. All they need to do is put the print option back in
the drop down file menu.
