where on the census is McLaran Ave.?
Hi,
If I know an address ... like 1305 McLaran Ave., St. Louis, MO. ... how can
I find it on the census of 1930? I have HeritageQuest and it is not
indexed. Can anybody tell me in which ward of St. Louis this address would
be? Or how to find Gillis (Jack) Caldwell if he was still at that address.
We know he was there in Dec. of 1929.
Thanks,
Nancy

Re: where on the census is McLaran Ave.?
There is no Jack Caldwell or Gillis Caldwell in Ancestry's 1930 index. Can
you provide more info in case it was indexed incorrectly? Age? Race? Place
of birth? Anyone else in the household?
I went to the National Archives site to look at their geographic file for
the 1930 census. Two enumeration districts, 96-2 and 96-3, have McLaran in
their description:
T626 1227 ST. LOUIS CITY 96- 2 ST. LOUIS CITY, WARD 1 (PART), BOUNDED BY (N)
CITY LIMITS; (E) MCLARAN AVE., BROADWAY; (S) CALVARY AVE.; (W) W. FLORISSANT
AVE.
T626 1227 ST. LOUIS CITY 96- 3 ST. LOUIS CITY, WARD 1 (PART), BOUNDED BY (N)
CITY LIMITS; (E) HALLS FERRY RD., HORNSBY AVE.; (S) BROADWAY; (W) MCLARAN

Re: where on the census is McLaran Ave.?
Hi Doug,
I went all through 96-2 and 96-3, I think. (But does this mean anything
that starts with 96-2, such as 96-234, etc.?) The house numbers were
scattered of course, which is expected. However there was the McLaran Ave.
1100 numbers and the 1500 numbers but none of the 1300s. Just what I need!
I'm wondering if they reversed his name ... that is, instead of having his
last name as Caldwell maybe they put in his first name as his last ...
Gillis. I had that happen to one of my other ancestors. Would you please
try that one? I can't thank you enough for this. We have gone through over
1,000 images page by page and have had no luck.
Is Ancestry indexed so you have to put in the "exact" spelling? If so, it
could be Coldwell or Cladwell. Jack was born in 1907 ... a newly wed in
1930 ... wife is Mildred, born 1911. They MIGHT have moved to Illinois but
I can't find them there either. If they did it was right across the
Mississippi River probably into either Madison or St. Clair County. Or
maybe the census was taken prior to their marriage and Gillis (Jack) was
still alone. This one is driving me nuts.
Thanks,
Nancy

Re: where on the census is McLaran Ave.?
Oh, and here are a couple more details if you are doing an advanced search.
His middle name was Leo. I doubt he went by that but you never know. He
was born in MO. and she was born in IL. Both were white. Her middle name
was Lucille, which I doubt she used, too, but you never know.
Thanks again,

Nancy,
800-1800 McLaren Ave.- even #'s is in Enumeration Dist. 2, and 801-1800 odd

Hope this helps. I'll try to find more.

Thank you ... however I think I found all the 96-3s, unless they drop off
and are picked up later. I'm still not through all of Ward one yet.
Workin' on it though.
I'll keep checking back here today. Thanks for your continued help.
Maybe Doug has found him with a misspelling or some such thing. Or maybe he
can answer some of my other questions.
Or do you have Ancestry which is indexed as well? I wonder when/if
HeritageQuest will get the 1930 indexed as well.

I have tried every way I can think of and they don't seem to be in
Ancestry's index. There's a Gillis Caldwell in St. Clair Co, IL but he's 37,
black, and his wife's name is Vanetta or something like that.
People were missed in the census. Maybe they were in the middle of moving
when it was taken.
Can you give me the name of any of his neighbors?

No Gillis but I just saw a Gilford Caldwell and Lena in 1920 at age 28, and
he is black too so I guess the 1930 was no misread image. Ours was
definitely white. Oh, well, back to the drawing boards.
Our Gillis was still only 13 in 1920 so we have his 1920 census already. It
was shortly after 1920 that his father was killed in a well accident and the
family tried to keep together till they all married and went their separate
ways.
Thank so much for all your help.

concerned. I had seen the ED listed as being in St. Louis Ward one so that

Re: where on the census is McLaran Ave.?
Nancy,
I'm only guessing, but I think the term "independent city" in the census
refers to the fact that St. Louis City became independent from St. Louis
County in the late 1800's. I'm copying the explanation from the St. Louis
County Library web site, which includes how the split has affected research.
St. Louis City and Washington D.C. are the only such cities in the U.S. that
exist without being part of a county.
The St. Louis City & County Split of 1876
&
How It Affects Research in St. Louis
One of the ways to prepare for successful research in a geographic area
is to learn about the history of that area. This is especially true in St.
Louis, Missouri where the events of local history have made research much
more challenging. Before beginning St. Louis research, we encourage you to
a.. review the information below about the City/County Split and how
it affects research
b.. look at our "St. Louis Resources in Special Collections" web page
which lists links to all SC web pages concerning St. Louis resources as
well as special St. Louis indexes that are in paper format only.
The Split
Prior to 1877, St. Louis County encompassed the City of St. Louis plus all
other areas within the county boundaries including such towns as Kirkwood
and Florissant. During that time, the county seat was the City of St. Louis.
Often called the "Great Divorce," the split occurred after the citizens of
St. Louis County (that included both city and county) voted on the question
of whether the City of St. Louis should separate from the county and become
an independent city.
The vote took place 22 Aug 1876, and the initial count indicated that the
separation question had failed by just over 100 votes. Supporters of
separation then brought charges, including fraud, and a recount was ordered.
The recount took four months so it was late 1876 before it was determined
that the vote for separation had passed. The story of the split is really
much more complex than that, so consult the reading list below for more
in-depth material.
The Dividing Point
This separation of city and county affects where public records of interest
to genealogists are housed after 1876. While the split actually occurred in
1876, it was 1877 before parallel record keeping systems-one for the city
and one for the county-existed.
If you are looking for a public record in St. Louis, it is helpful to first
determine if the event-or the recording of it-took place prior to the end of
1876, or after the beginning of 1877. This division point is best used only
as a "rule of thumb" for records in the time period around and after the
split as that is often a "gray area." Keep in mind that it was not until
December of 1878-two years after the vote-that the newly built St. Louis
County Courthouse, located in the new county seat of Clayton, Mo., was ready
for occupancy. The number of records found in St. Louis County record books
for the years 1877-1878 is sparse.
Where Are the Original Records Housed Today?
Prior to the split (through 1876) All City and County records created
prior to the split were kept by the City of St. Louis and are housed by
various governmental offices for the City of St. Louis in downtown St.
Louis. Many of those records are available on microfilm.
After the split (1877 to present) City records created after the split
are maintained and housed by city governmental offices for the City of St.
Louis in downtown St. Louis. Many of those records are available on

County records created after the split are maintained and housed by
county governmental offices for the County of St. Louis. In late 1877,
Clayton, Mo. was selected as the new county seat and that is where most of
the county governmental offices are located today. Many of those records are
available on microfilm
Why Can't I Find My Ancestor's Record?
a.. If your research is in the post-1876 time period, you need to
check the records for BOTH city and county. Why? You need to check both
record locations because people's lives often involved traveling back and
forth between city and county-and the records of events in their lives were
recorded based on where the event occurred, not where they lived. This
applies to a wide range of records but especially to
a.. births (The place of birth was not necessarily where the
parents lived.)
b.. marriages (Where were the vows exchanged?)
c.. deaths (Exactly where did the person die? The location of a
hospital often determined whether a person died in the city or county.)
d.. burials (Were they buried in the city, then later moved to a
cemetery in county and vice versa? Also were they buried in one cemetery and
ALL burials in that cemetery were moved to another location?)
b.. If you see a location listed as "St. Louis" when working with
family records after 1876, try to find out whether that refers to St. Louis
County or to the City of St. Louis.
c.. As an example, an event - such as a marriage - could have
occurred in rural St. Louis County before the split, but the officiating
minister did not record his records until two and a half years later. By
1879, the new courthouse was built in Clayton and their record keeping
system was established, so that is where he went to record the marriage
which had occurred in the county. If he had recorded the marriage in a
timely manner - just after the wedding - the record would now be housed by
the Recorder of Deeds Office in the City of St. Louis with all the other
pre-1876 marriages. Because of the delay in recording the marriage, however,
the record would now be housed by the Recorder of Deeds Office in the County
Courthouse in Clayton, Mo.
Two St. Louis Library Systems
An example of how the split affects researchers is the fact that
the split of 1876 is the reason there are two St. Louis library systems. We
are St. Louis County Library system which serves St. Louis County and has
its headquarters at 1640 South Lindbergh Blvd. St. Louis Public Library
system serves the City of St. Louis and has its main facility at 13th and

systems have excellent genealogical and local history holdings.

Louis in downtown St.

are maintained and housed by city governmental offices for the City of St.
Louis in downtown St. Louis. Many of those records are available on

Hi,
If I know an address ... like 1305 McLaran Ave., St. Louis, MO. ...
how
can
I find it on the census of 1930? I have HeritageQuest and it is

We know he was there in Dec. of 1929.

The e-mail with the image bounced. I removed nospam from your address but
that came back as invalid recipient.
Since you posted in another message that Mildred's maiden name was Main, the
image I found with Mildred Reed couldn't be the right one unless she was a
very young widow.

I couldn't stop looking. Was Mildred's last name Reed? If so I may have
found them. I found a Leon Caldwell living in ward 15 on Botanical Ave.
He's
a roomer in a boarding house. Also in the house is a Mildred Reed. Her
age
is given as 22 and his as 23. I know it's a long shot but if that was
her
maiden name I can send you the image of the page.
Doug
Well, this gives reason for thought. Yes, if you don't mind please send
it.
Just take out the nospam in my email address. I appreciate this. Don't
"think" it is him but you just never know. I'm not closing doors on any
possibility.
Thanks, (and thanks for your continued determination)

Re: where on the census is McLaran Ave.?
Are you sure you left no spaces? Mike's images have come through just fine.
Thank you very much for your help. Now I need to sort my thoughts and go
further with this one. Still can't find them but haven't had time to browse
again today. And tomorrow is out, too, so maybe Friday will turn something
up.
There was another marriage at a young age that we are in the dark about so
that was why I wanted to take a look at this one. But it probably is not
ours. Thank you.

Nancy,
I'm only guessing, but I think the term "independent city" in the census
refers to the fact that St. Louis City became independent from St. Louis
County in the late 1800's. I'm copying the explanation from the St. Louis
County Library web site, which includes how the split has affected research.
St. Louis City and Washington D.C. are the only such cities in the U.S. that
exist without being part of a county.
