I have been actively working on my family's genealogy for about a year.
One of the problems that has come up is organization. I have
downloaded images of census and such and have it fairly well organized.
My big problem is emails from other researchers. What are the techniques
other researcher use for this information so it is
independent of the email program?
Organized so the information can be easily found.
What file type is best. pdf. eml, etc.

I organize my digital files by surname, and then I have folders
for census images, legal documents, correspondence, and so on.
Don't waste time with ".eml" files, hardly anything opens them.
PDF is probably your best bet, or copy and past the content into
a text document.

An paperless office managemant system is good

PaperPort Professional 11 is the most productive and cost effective way
for everyone in your office to scan, organize, find and share all of
your documents including paper, PDF, application files and photographs.
PaperPort Professional combines the efficiency of document management,
the convenience of advanced scanning capabilities and the power of PDF
document creation and assembly to simplify information sharing and archiving
but I prefer to do research, keep digital recordss on line and avoid
paper other than notebooks in the archives

Copy'n'paste emails including headers, into (a) the right

document and save it in any format you think you'll be able
to read in 10 years.
_I_ prefer (a); others prefer (b). I also tend to print off
really important stuff and put it in a file-folder in the
metal 4-drawer file cabinet.
FWIW, YMMV, etc etc

As far as digital images go, emails etc..I too have individual surname
folders and subfolders with different categories. However, I prefer to keep
the emails in the .eml format. Good luck!
