court house records for settlement in death
My grandfather died in an accident involving a streetcar where the
streetcar company was at fault. His widow and family received a
settlement. In what courthouse records might I find reference to a
settlement

That depends on whether a lawsuit was filed. If an out of court
settlement was reached, here would be no lawsuit and therefore no
court records. Even if a suit was filed, all the final documents may
say is that the case has been settled and it is therefore dismissed.
A final settlement doesn't have to indicate the terms or sums paid. A
case that goes to jury verdict will specify the jury award.
You need to check records in the county where the accident happened.
Most of them have an index. You would be lookling under civil cases
(as opposed to criminal, juvenile, etc.).
Check what court records have been filmed by the LDS for the
jurisdiction where he died.

If you have a more specific date of death or when you think the
settlement might have been paid (such as the month and the day), you
could check newspaper articles AFTER the death to see if there was any
public mention of it, but most likely it was a private matter known
only to the parties. I would be checking the probate files at the
county courthouse to see if the grandfather had a last will and
testament and if he did, there might be a page in the file that
mentions the settlement. With this being so far back, however, you
will be lucky if the courthouse keeps records that far back (sometimes
they can be found on microfilm), but most courthouses do not keep
files this old because the paper would deteriorate.

They may not be easily accessible by the general public, but they

places) still preserved in their original state.

Court records are official government records - barring flood or fire,
or some natural disaster, records are not intentionally destroyed.

That makes me wonder about my grandfather's previous wife (before he
married my grandmother) who died in Glasgow in 1934 after being knocked
down by a motor bus (along with her friend, who survived, and her dog, who
didn't!). I found a newspaper article about it in "The Scotsman", but am
now wondering if anything else might have happened with the bus company at
the time, other than "sorry about your loss"?
Now Scotlands People have released the new indexes, I did find another 1/2
brother of my mother's, whom she didn't know about and know he died and
had a daughter and I'm trying my best to trace her so may find out the
full story if I find her, and she'll talk with me.
Still, any suggestions about whether there may be any other records about
the accident in Glasgow would be appreciated.

also a police case against the driver?

Can't see a report mentioned, just the RCE which simply expands on the
cause of death by saying "result of being knocked down by a motor bus" and
was exactly a month after the event.
It was signed by the procurator fiscal though, which I just looked up to
see what it was and it seems that it is quite likely there would have been
some sort of investigation. I can't see how to find out though, presumably
I could just write to the current office and ask?
