US Military enlistment/draft ?

Excuse my ignorance on the subject. But I was wondering, if you were 15 in
1870, living in Massachusetts, when you became legal age, would you have had
to register for a draft or would going into the military be voluntary?

Thanks,

Michelle

Thanks Marge. I googled before posting but I don't think I was using the

correct search terms. I just found this info here,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conscripti ... ted_States , the heading
Early Drafts helps a bit..

Coming up with the right terms is always the hardest part; you
know the information is out there, but you don't know the jargon
it's couched in.

And sometimes, when you repeat the search later, you get
different results. New content is being created all the time,
keep checking up on old search strings.

Keep in mind that not everyone knew their age back then.

Also kids lied about their age so they could fight along
side their fathers, cousins, uncles, friends, etc...

I'd like to note that although that article states correctly that
there was no *national* draft for the War of 1812- there *was* a
draft. It was conducted by the states in response to filling quotas
required by the Feds.

So you need to look at local law to see what the requirements were.
Many of the same quotas were imposed during the civil war so there is
a chance, though I don't remember ever reading about it, that some
states might have required a registration in 1870.

The answer is no. There was no peace time draft until about 1940 and
that was really in anticipation of WW II. Before that the only draft
was the Civil War in 1862 (Confed) and 1863 (Union). A permanent
peace-time as well as war-time office of Selective Service or its
equivilant did not exist until 1940. The large standing army that
required draftees is purely a Cold War phenomenon.
