HeritageQuest census lookup please

Legg inn av Tony H. » 18 nov 2007 13:54:00

Would SKS with HeritageQuest please look at the Charles W. Roberts
household on the 1900 Skelton Twp, Warrick County, Indiana, census to
see if the name of the s-son (stepson?) is any clearer? Ancestry has
him indexed as Roy A. Prucke. Looking at the handwriting on that page,
it appears that his name does start with a "P".

Sarah Ann Hart Roberts died in 1904. On the 1910 Warrick census, this
child was living with her father Joshua Hart, listed as his grandson,
and listed as Roy Hart.

For the moment I am assuming that Roy A. P_____ was the child of Sarah
Ann Hart Roberts even though on the 1900 census Sarah was listed as
having 0 children/0 living, I've found no birth records for this child,
and I've found no marriage records for Sarah Ann to anyone other than
Charles Roberts.

Thanks,
Tony

Hello Tony,

Here is what I found on HQ (name slightly different):

1900 > INDIANA > WARRICK > SKELTON TWP Series: T623 Roll: 411 Page: 346
Surname Given Name Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year
ROBERTS CHARLES M 22 M W IN IN WARRICK SKELTON TWP 1900

For the SSon Roy A. PxxxKE is what I can see. The smudge is on HQs copy as well.

HQ transcribed the name as (with obvious err in the age):

1900 > INDIANA > WARRICK > SKELTON TWP Series: T623 Roll: 411 Page: 346
Surname Given Name Age Sex Race Birthplace State County Location Year
BURKE ROY A 3 M W IN IN WARRICK SKELTON TWP 1900

There is a large smugged area over the surname it does look like P___ke.

It is possible the Roy took his grandfather's surname, or Joshua adopted

It may be, and I've always assumed it is, how many children born and
living from this marriage. So since Charles and Sarah have only been
married for 7 months Roy was not their child. It is possible that Roy is
an illegitimate child. He was born just one month before Sarah turned 16.

Thanks,
Tony

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the lookup. I kinda thought that smudge would be on HQ as
well, but had to ask just in case.

I've been toying with the thought that his name was Pancake since there
were a few in Warrick County and several in Pike County just north of
Warrick. Now the name Burke gives me more to think about. Thanks for
the info.

Thanks for the lookup. It looks like P____ke to me as well, but Mike in
Ohio tells me that HQ has him indexed as Roy A. Burke, which it very
well could be and gives me more to look for.

Good thought and makes sense...Roy was only about 6 when his mother
died. However, I haven't found any trace of a Roy Hart, born in
Indiana, with a DOB within 5 years of 1897. So I don't know what name
he used.

For the moment I am assuming that Roy A. P_____ was the child of Sarah
Ann Hart Roberts even though on the 1900 census Sarah was listed as

I've always thought it was how many children born/living a woman had no
matter how many marriages, but I guess the answer depended on how census
taker asked the question or how the question was understood. Whatever,
I'm like you, I believe that when Sarah answered 0 children/ 0 living
that she did mean in her current marriage.

Was Roy an illegitimate child? Yup, I think so too MAINLY because when
Sarah Ann married Charles, she gave her maiden name. Wouldn't you think
that a recent widow with a child would use her married name when she got
married again?

Thanks again for your help.

Tony
