Legacy vs TMG

Legg inn av Autumn » 12 nov 2007 01:09:14

I use The Master Genealogist and have for many years. I just read the latest
version of Family Tree Magazine and they had testers who looked at 3-4
different programs. Legacy got the best reviews. I was just wondering if
anyone who used to use TMG has switched to Legacy? I would like to hear your
thoughts on this.

Although I consider myself a good genealogist, TMG just overwhelms me when
it comes to adding the source information. Every time I get away from it a
little while I have to learn all over again when I come back to it. I would
really like to get my sources into the computer. I have them all in very
organized paper files.

Thank you

Legacy is free, so why not give it a try yourself. It's the only way
you'll know if you like it.

Opinions about what's the best genealogical program are as varied as
the programs themselves.

I use Legacy and love it because it's so easy to use. I've also tried
PAF (another freebie) but find it clumsy and clumpy and not in the
least intuitive. Others reckon PAF is great.

I have used TMG since version 1.0. I did give Legacy a try but really
didn't care for it at all. Yes, TMG can be a little daunting with some of
its advanced features, but that is why I like it so much. It can do exactly
what I want it to. I have both of Elizabeth Shown Mills' books on sourcing
and in TMG I can make custom templates to include all the source elements
suggested. It takes some time but once they're created I find it very easy
to document my sources.

However a genealogy program is a personal thing and what one person likes
another might not. You have to use whatever you feel comfortable with and
does what you want it to.

I am not too fussy about Legacy's "source" information
either, so I don't bother with that - I just add what kind
of document I have to the "notes / research section" , and
most of my information is scanned in now.

take care
