Female Joe or Zoe
Just curious how to report over a thousand errors on
Ancestry.com and Heritage Quest ?
I have found over 3,186 Female Joe's on both of these
databases, and they all look like Zoe to me when I look
at the census pages. Just curious if there was a way
to notify these two companies of the errors. I have
both databases at the library, but I don't see a way
to report errors.
take care,
Jonathan

I cannot address the Joe versus Zoe issue without actually seeing an
example. But I do not think Zoe is not that common a name. Have you
looked at other names that definitely begin with Z and other names
that definitely begin with J (like John) for a particular enumerator
in a particular census? Writing styles have changed over the years.
Also, individual enumerators have there own little quirks. I have seen
special symbols used for 'ss' and other double letter combinations in
early census's.
As the other replier said, you have to be an individual Ancestry
subscriber to report probable or known errors.

Hi Fred,
I've never seen Josephine, Johannah shortened to Joe before. I've only seen

If you want to look at the errors. Then just search ancestry for Joe first
name and blank last name and choose female and then search.

Did enumerators have to take a legibility cursive writing test back then ?

Jonathan, in looking at the 1880 census on Ancestry.com, I checked the
females named "Joe" and noticed during a quick scan that in all cases but
one (Joe Toy--in a long list of Chinese names), the female name "Joe" was
either listed as "Mrs. Joe SURNAME" or in combination with another name,
e.g. "Joe Anna," "Joe Ellen," "Ella Joe," "Mary Joe."
I suggest that the "Mrs. Joe SURNAME" listings are those of females married
to Joe SURNAME, and that the others, with the double names, are just that,
and not "Zoe's."
Notice that when you search for females named "Zoe" in 1880, there are many
of them, but the vast majority have the single name: "Zoe" SURNAME.
I would probably consider the possibility that a female "Joe SURNAME"
(without the "Mrs." or double name) might be a faulty transcription, but
otherwise, the Joe Anna's, Martha Joe's, and Annie Joe's are just that,
whether or not we would spell them that way now. (The ladies themselves
probably didn't spell their names that way then; the census takers seem to
spell many names in quite creative fashions!)

Re: Female Joe or Zoe
I can't attest to standard practices but - I had a great aunt (1881-1971)
who 'went' by the name 'Joe', a memorial stone in the family cemetery is
also Joe; but then she was rather unconventional, being an M. D. in Pa. Her
birth record indicates her given name was 'Johanna' but no one that I've
spoken with knew that.
