Obama, Cheney, Bush relationships

Legg inn av Jim Elbrecht » 17 okt 2007 16:10:39

They mentioned on TV this morning that Barack Obama was distantly
related to the Bush and Cheney families. [9th cousin once removed
for Obama/Cheney and 11th cousins for Bush 41]

The common ancestors mentioned on
http://www.suntimes.com/news/politics/o ... 09.article
is "Samuel Hinckley and Sarah Soole Hinckley of 17th century
Massachusetts" for the Bush side- and "Mareen and Susannah Duvall " of
17th century France.

This page claims that "According to Lynne Cheney, Obama is a
descendent of Mareen Duvall. Her son married the granddaughter of a
Richard Cheney, who arrived in Maryland in the late 1650's from
England."
http://snafu-ed.blogspot.com/2007/10/ob ... lated.html

My database has Laurence Cheney arriving in Mass before 1640 with son
William- and not a Richard Cheney in that direct line until the
vice-president's father. Nor do I have a line that goes to MD where
the many Richard Cheneys settled as well as Duvalls.

My wife is related to both Cheney and Bush and I've been trying to
make an Obama connection for her- but I can't seem to do it with any
of the trees I've entered through the years. Most are based on Gary
Boyd Roberts- but I've got some other sources in there, so I might
have gone wrong someplace.

Has someone already done this tree with some sources so I can look it
over?

Thanks,
Jim

9th cousin once removed? That's 11 generations of separations. After four
or five generations, the amount of genetic material that you share is so
miniscule that the term "relation" becomes somewhat laughable.

Here's another link with Obama's tree and notations of how he's
related to Cheney, Bush, Samuel Clemens, Harry Truman & some others.
http://www.suntimes.com/images/cds/spec ... _tree.html

But I still don't see the actual Bush or Cheney connections.

It does seem so remote. But when I told my wife that we were 13th
cousins, she was really grossed out. [her grandparents being 8th
cousins doesn't bother her so much]

So I guess degree of 'closeness' is relative, so to speak.

Well, just tell her that when the family split from the closest shared
ancestor, her side seemed to get all the good genes. :)

I think this page explains the confusion.
http://www.wargs.com/political/cheney.html

The Cheney direct line is the same as I have.
Richard Bruce[the VP]/Richard Herbert/Thomas Herbert/Samuel
Fletcher/Elias
Eaton/Ebenezer/William/Joseph/Benjamin/Thomas/William/Laurence
I have Laurence as the immigrant [Berkshire England to Suffolk
County,Mass]with son William as a 7 yr old child.

The abovementioned page has that- plus these folks;
#320 is Edward TYLER m. Elizabeth DUVALL.
#640 is Robert TYLER m. Susannah DUVALL.
#642 is Samuel DUVALL m. Elizabeth IJAMS
#1282 & 1284 is Mareen DUVALL m. Susannah _____
#1286 is William IJAMS m. Elizabeth CHEYNEY

So the DUVALLs & CHEYNEYs of MD are joined [sort of] And the MD
immigrant was a Richard - but if they are tied to the direct line of
CHENEY it was in England- not here.
