Help Find "Huggins" in 1900 & 1910 Census

Legg inn av DianeLeMasson » 14 okt 2007 18:38:26

Hi

Would a kind person please help me find this family?
It seems this surname is a victim as well of being mangled.
I have unsuccessfully tried variations of spellings with no luck
in searching in Ancestry. I even went as far into the thousands
just to see what it'll bring me, using all sorts of searching techniques.
Ancestry is so frustrating when you have to search with 'no exact matches'.
It's possible I am not providing the correct search terms that is creating
a problem for me in finding this family in other census records.
The true spelling is 'Huggins'
Here is what I have found so far.

Head of Household:
Andrew Huggins, born in PA, abt 1830

On the 1860 census he is listed as Andrew HuggANS, age 30,born 1830 in PA.
New York Ward 11 District 3, NY,NY; Roll M653_799; Page 8; Image:10
Residing with him are: Wife Anna Eliz, age 23, born in NY
Son: Samuel, age 6 born in NY.....Son: Andrew, age 8/12 born in NY

1880 Census
Andrew R. "Huggins", age 48, est; 1832 born in PA. His parents b/p is PA.
New York (Manhattan), New York City-Greater, NY; Roll T9_871; Page: 76;
Ed: 107; Image: 0648
Residing with him are: Wife; Eliz, age 43, born in NY
Son: Saml, age 26 born in NY. Daughter: Elizabeth, age17 born in NY
Son: Francis B, age 12 born in NY (or possible in NJ)
Boarder: George Dietrich, age 24

I was able to find his sons, Francis (Frank) "Haggen", now married in the
1910
census in NJ, and Samuel "Huggins", now married in Bronx, NY.
Including other census years.
But nothing more on Andrew & the rest of his family members.

I would so appreciate someone with better searching abilities using Ancestry
for any help in finding this family in the 1900 & 1910 census.
Thank you!

Diane

Have you any reason to believe that Andrew and his wife Anna Elizabeth
HUGGINS were still living in 1900/1910? If they can't be found in the
censuses of those years, their deaths between 1880 and 1900 would be a
logical explanation for their absence from those records.

Diane,

It could be that both Andrew and his wife were dead by the time of the
1900 census and that's why you can't find them. I also tried at
ancestry, but with no luck.

Try this site:
http://www.italiangen.org/NYCDeathSearch.asp

Even though it's an Italian-oriented site, this database is for the
entire area, and there is an Andrew Higgins, aged 58, who died in 1899
in Manhattan. There are also some marriage databases at this site, so
you can look for the marriages of their children.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

I like to check all avenues before I decide to not look any further.

Hi Cathy

Thanks for the link & for checking it out for me.
And also checking in Ancestry.
Yes it is all possible they could've died by those years.
I did consider this but I want to check all my avenues before
I close the door with this man.
Besides I am a lousy searcher & figure two heads are better
than one. I have seen others who have reach out with their
'brick walls', find through others with better search capabilities.
Again thank you for your help.

Hi Laurie,

I have tried HQ also with no luck.
And that's trying it with all variations of spellings.
If you don't mind would you give it a try?
I'm afraid I am not very good at this searching thing.
This is why I've ask for help.
What I am also having problems with is finding Andrew's
son Frank B born 1868 or 1872 in the 1900 census.
I found him still living with his father up to 1889 then 1910
and up to 1930. Living in NJ, married to Florence.
I have tried so many ways to find this person & his family,
I just don't understand why I can't.
Thank you for your offer I do appreciate it.
