and covered lots of ground. MIL is good at this! At her best, she was after
a site that she hadn't been to in some years. She went like this: "Oh, I
don't know if we'll find this one. Last time dad and I came here we couldn't
find it. We don't come to this one often. We might not find it. Here it is,
right here." And there, six feet from the car, was the marker.
We found one tall stone with multiple markings by at least two different
carvers. The older ones were extremely hard to read, and in German at that,
in an old-timey script. It didn't look like the pictures were going to show
any of what the writing said, so we took pen and paper and wrote down what
we thought it said, at times feeling the grooves to try to make out what
was there. I get the pictures home, and half the writing was crystal clear.
Had I known, the right camera angle would have done wonders.
Some had exact dates.
I keep forgetting to bring a whisk broom and squirt bottle with me for
cleaning markers. Someone remind me next time.
