Could SKS with access to the 1881 census images send me the image for;
Class: RG11; Piece: 2555; Folio: 100; Page: 13; Line: ; GSU roll:
1341616.
[the only hit for Ann Jemima Painter on ancestry]
These folks are pretty distant relations, and I would have gone with
just the ancestry transcriptions which I get with the US subscription-
but the way they are listed makes me really curious;
[as far as I know the farm- Furzen Leaze, in Cirencester- was owned by
Richard and Anne Jemima (Whetmath) Painter - Martha was his mom. the
other names are unfamiliar]
Alice Hobbs 17
Edith Elizabeth Lord 5
Ethel Mary Lord 7
Ann Jemima Painter 50
Martha Painter 83
Richard Painter 36
David Parker 20
Thanks-
Jim

Re: image of 1881 census
I got it.
Thanks Marge!
It looks like the names got jumbled by the transcriber, not the
enumerator. Makes more sense this way.
[and of course every bit of knowledge brings a new question- I see
the next 2 families are enumerated at "Furzen Leaze Cottage"- one
family head is a shepherd, the next is "ag laborer'. Would these
probably have been employees of the Furzen Leaze Farm - or just
renters?
Thanks-
Jim

Thanks Hugh,
Now that I've taken the time to read the whole page- Furzen Leaze Farm
was apparently 230 acres and Richard had 6 men and 3 boys working for
him.
That answers what I was wondering regardless of which farm the folks
in the cottages were working for. The Painters were apparently folks
of some means.

or had a mortgage
I have seen a hint of one of mine with a nineteenth century mortgage
In 1888 Robert Rickards bought Usk Priory from the mortgagees of Thomas
Watkins of Highmead in the parish of Llanfair Cilgedin, Monmouthshire.

I assumed the farm was sold by then
becasue in 1881 another family is in it
perhaps the BUNNING rented it
just another piece for the family historians jigsaw puzzle
do read some Thomas Hardy to get a picture of rural life
