George SAVILLE, Sheffield -> Solingen

Legg inn av John Hill » 06 aug 2007 10:45:30

I am completely new to research in German genealogy, and am looking for
advice on where and how to look for my great-uncle's family.

In 1871 or thereabouts George Saville moved from Sheffield to Solingen
to run a Pearl Works (nacre, or mother-of-pearl, not jewellery) that had
been acquired by his younger brother. Family tradition has it that this
was in settlement of a bad debt, but that is by the way.

The English and German branches of the family remained in close contact
until 1914, and to an extent between 1918 and 1939. After that the fact
that Solingen was in East Germany made contact much more difficult.

Here is a summary of the family:

George Saville (17 Feb 1847 - 29 Dec 1889)
& Teresa Emmerline Flint (10 Jan 1848 - 2 Aug 1929)
-> Mabel Saville (30 Jul 1869 - 3 Apr 1951)
-> & Paul Tuckmantel ( - 29 Dec 1939)
-> Millie Saville (2 May 1871 - Aug 1954)
-> & Paul Selter
-> Fanny Saville (2 Aug 1875 - )
-> & Rensburg-Lengnick
-> George Clifford Saville (12 Jun 1877 - 26 Dec 1957)
-> Arnold Saville (29 Sep 1879 - 11 Oct 1881)
-> Gilbert Saville (23 Nov 1881 - 15 Oct 1973)
-> Norman Vivian Saville(16 Jun 1883 - 1 Aug 1979)
-> & Nellie Barker (ca 1871 - 1 Feb 1951)
-> & Ida Gore (18 Sep 1903 - Feb 1995)
-> Frank Saville (9 Dec 1884 - 9 Feb 1885)
-> Vernon Saville (23 Nov 1886 - )
-> & Mabel Rhylands
-> Polly Saville (18 Feb 1890 - 1968)
-> & Kühne

Of the children, Mabel and Millie were born in Sheffield, the remainder
in Solingen.
Two members of the family, George Clifford and Norman Vivian, returned
to England.
A son of Paul Selter and Milllie met a cousin of mine in the 1950s, I
think in Cologne.

Are there records that would enable me to trace the marriages and
children of these people? Are any of them on line?

Any help would be appreciated!

John.

a danish friend had great success contacting her mother's family in
east Germany
by writing web pages and sharing her tree on World Connect

they had been out of touch for at least 60 years

a family album turned up in Austtralia and she was able to give it on
the the east germans who had lost all their old photographs

you can imagine the thrill
they said "It was like getting their family history back"

Many of the people you mention appear in a tree on the web created by Rob
Walsh. Presumably he's a relation you already know of...

Yes, he is. He is descended in the female line from George Saville's
younger brother, John James Saville. This makes him my 2C2R*.

Alas, we've already exchanged all the information we have :-(

John.
