Mazurkewitz & Bogdanowitz

Legg inn av Ken » 28 jul 2007 16:09:11

Hi Folks,

Might anybody know anything about the Mazurkewitz families in Brooklyn
NY from the late 1800's to the mid 1900s? Various family members
spelled the name in various ways, also using Mazurkewicz and
Mazurkiewitz. Our oldest remembered Mazurk (1876-1951), originally
from Minsk as the story goes, was known as Moses, or Masche, and
eventually as Massy Mazurkewitz, but his name may originally have been
spelled Mazurkiewicz. Although Minsk has been part of Russia for a
long time, the family has always known itself as being Polish.

He married Josephine, whose family name was generally known as some
spelling of Bogdanowicz. They had six children, Stephen, Annette,
Helen, William, Sophie, and Walter, and we've already located most of
the members of those families. I've been told that Moses/Masche/Massy
had eight siblings, mostly brothers. Josephine also had a number of
brothers.

There were many Mazurk families in the NYC area at the time. I've
been able to locate 57 Mazurk census records from 1910, 1920, and
1930, and also 9 Bogs. I can email the list, and any of the census
files that may be needed. None of these include Massy and Josephine,
or their children, but the geographical proximity makes it likely that
some of them may be their siblings. Any assistance in identifying
those would be much appreciated. Thanks.

Is it normal for for people from Minsk to keep their maiden name on
marriage?

Thanks for the effort. That's quite a coincidence. I see that there
are four there by that name. Our Josephine, however, was Josephine
Sechko at the time of death. We have her death certificate, and we do
have her SS death index from LDS. We also have a Certificate of
Burial Privilege in Most Holy Trinity Cemetery in Brooklyn. She was
buried in 1977, in grave that already contained Anthony Bagdonawitz
1924 (her father or brother, we presume), John Bagdonewitz 1933 (her
brother, we presume), and Anna Begdonawitz 1938, who we know was her
mother. Her death certificate indicates her father as Anthony
Bagdonawitz, but it's been said that she did also have a brother named
Anthony, a brother John, and another brother Frank. The different
spellings of the family name can certainly create major genealogical
difficulties.
