Cannot find an obit in any local papers (Buffalo, NY). Is there an index
of obits nationwide? There should be. This was his death date according
to the SSDI.

Joe,
Try the city library for obit indexes. They probably have the newspapers on
microfilm and most likely have indexed the obituaries from the microfilms.
There is no nationwide index of obits. Wow, that would be great---but what
a project! Some newspaper archives have been totally lost or destroyed (as
were all those in my hometown, 1910-1980, when the newspaper sold to a
chain), so it is impossible to index those. In addition, others may still
exist but not on microfilm and are very brittle and difficult to handle,
damaged by moisture, etc.
Good luck----

Re: Frustration in Obit land
Donna, thanks, but I did do that. This is frustrating because we checked
4 days after the death for an obit in the Buffalo News archive at the
Erie County library with no results. So either the death date is wrong
(is that possible?) or he didn't deserve an obit (is THAT possible?)

Information for obits has to be provided by survivors. Often there were no
survivors who were able to (or wanted to) do this, especially if the death
occurred in a locale where the deceased was relatively unknown. The last
two elders in our family who passed away had no obits published-- just death
notices. While there were survivors who could have come up with some
information, it just didn't seem an important part of the mourning process
at the time.
