I downloaded the Beta... So far, I'm not that greatly impressed with it.
I've only had it for a day though.
What is "new" or different in this version?

So far I've noticed that it lacks the descendant reports that were available
in previous versions, and as Hugh mentioned it's built on the .NET
Framework. I like the revamped people view interface where you can see the
pedigree and family view all at once, although the text is sort of small for
these old eyes.

"questions or encounter any errors in the program please email
ftmpublicbeta@tgn.com"
I have just written to them saying these reasons I will not be updating -
1)
typography age 71 the print is too tiring on my eyes
control + does not increase text size sufficiently
2)
data entry
I want the traditional family view all on one page
and if they want to get serious about data entry
they better license the set of templates from
http://www.custodian3.co.uk/
3)
keyboard short cuts
the FTM 16 ones do not work in FTM 17
my wrist hurts if I use the mouse too much
4)
reports
Outline descendant report is what I use in email all the time
nothing in FTM 17 help menu - no hot links
5)
english counties will be a problem
Kilmington SOM
with the Chapman code throws an error message
today it is in Wiltshire
HISTORICAL counties wanted
before the 1975-1996 counties and the 1975-1996 regions
so we will see if they make that fix
even for the US market most trees should end up across the ocean
København
danish spelling for Copenhagen threw a good error message
chose count or city - both spelled the same
====
I am using http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?db=lapham as my test
database
5928 people 10517 kb took nearly three minutes to import

So far I've noticed that it lacks the descendant reports that were available
in previous versions, and as Hugh mentioned it's built on the .NET
Framework. I like the revamped people view interface where you can see the
pedigree and family view all at once, although the text is sort of small for
these old eyes.
http://beta.familytreemaker.com/

User Interface is arranged differently (frankly, I prefer the way it was
done in FTM 16), and has an updated look to it (merely eye candy). It
integrates with MapQuest for location info. It is capable of searching more
genealogy web sites, including user specified sites.
FTM 2008 appears to use a true database engine (MSDE) to store data, but, as
yet, there isn't a query capability on the database. Media files are stored
in folder hierarchies external to the database.
However, many features have been dropped or trimmed back -- not sure if this
is just for the Beta or not: on web search, you can no longer mark records
as being Done, Ignore, etc., nor can you filter results returned. Reporting
has been significantly reduced. I can't find a way to do a columnar custom
report in the Beta version.
Of the five FTM 16 files I tried to import, three had fatal errors.
All-in-all, I'd say the quality of the program right now is more like an
Alpha release than a Beta version. I certainly couldn't recommend it as it
currently stands...

Investigating the Help on this topic (in the User manual I think), we
found something to the effect that "older" genealogy programs had used
Ref Nos to identify records but that FTM didn't do this and used Names.
Ref Nos weren't considered necessary but were just included in case some
people used to older programs wanted them.
Now, to me, this is patent b*ll*cks! Any relational database (and
surely that's what a genealogy program is) needs a Unique Identifier for

of Arthurs, Johns, Arthur Johns and John Arthurs will know that names
are in no way unique.
